It's another one of those ideas that makes people think will solve a problem when it's main agenda is to outsource public services. As with all privatisation ideas the prime goal of the business at hand is to make profits with least cost, no public good or incentive comes into play. As most toll roads are privately owned one of Barnetts mates is in for some big bucks.

Crazy thing is the logic and stats that come into play to accept this change of behaviour are all wrong. As already mentioned it ensures the rich are the only road users. Perhaps freight should be done via trains, road planning take into account all the mistakes of other cities, perhaps there is no easy money in those ideas.

What's next a tax on the air we breath, oh wait that is coming, the more you breath the more you pay...

Ahoy, In my opinion its just about raising revnue.
In general the rich get all the services the poor can walk.
But, if you consider cites like London and Rome this sort of idea has helped with trafiic congestion.

In my humble opinion toll roads are an admission of incompetence by Governments.

If they can't build a decent road system on the revenue they already have they need some more capable people running the transport system. Whoever is in charge of that this week (is it still Troy??) needs to blow hard down the ear of the bureaucrats in control of planning and if they can't improve it, get someone else in who can.

Try driving a truck in and out of perth on the goats tracks we have to use look at yesterday another lose to the trucking family just a shit piece of road not nice when you have to stop and pull someone out of a wreck but the government don't care spend it else where

I know where your coming from Obbie Its middle of harvest And the road to Yuna is full of laden vehicles most have to go off the road to allow cars to pass us
And in the south east is it ? Rail is being discontinued So there will be or already are, even more trucks on the road A bad accident cant be too far away whether through wear and tear on the roads or just to much traffic on roads not able to cope with so much heavy traffic

Well if they improve the public transport system to the likes of Singapore or Hong Kong, then go ahead with the toll. There is a chance of success in reducing traffic goin into the cbd. But if they cant provide this and charge a toll, then a big no no.

Incompetency shouldn't charged to tax payer. Pay cut is needed for the one who fails the tax payers.

There only talking about tolls to enter the city.
I agree with it at peak times.
If everyone that was too full of themself took the train or bus to the city congestion peak hour would stop instantly.
The freeways look like carparks and the train just shoots past these wannabes at 120kph .
Should be a time on it as well. People that dont have the option of public transport due to late finishes or early starts wouldnt have to pay then.
This talk of poor people wont drive then is total bollocks.
Its far cheaper to catch a bus or train than drive and park.

As for the USA toll roads are normal id say it cost us around $50 to drive from Chicago to new york. Went through probabally a dozen different toll booths

One needs to remember that it is not entirely people going into the city causing the jam but people going through the city. It appears to me that many people that live north side work in the south and those that live in the south work north, same goes for east west.
If train was the solution we should have seen improvements now, but it's the exact opposite. Increased population and poor city planning with consideration for workforce locations is the main cause. Same mistakes much older cities have made.

I'm even less inclined to go to work after reading all this.

I've seen a few bridges I like and the standard of cardboard boxes keeps getting better.

Disagree on the live in the north and work south etc.
Sureva small % would but ive done a fair bit of driving against peak hour ie out if the city in the morning and into it in the arvo and the freeways are deserted walking dead dead style while the other sides a carpark which wouldnt be the case if that was significant.
Most of the congestion is knobs that are too good for the bus or train.
Been in perth about 7years and I would have drucen into the city less than 20times.
Cheaper and easier to catch the bus or train

Wow, I just turned into an instant knob. *bow*
Train system is a joke here. If they have set it up right, make it fully automated, and everyone gets a card to top up their credit, like some Asian countries do, they wouldn't need guards standing at the entrance. Cost saving in the long run.

Btw i don't work in the city, i take freeway and into Graham Farmer...can't help it. It is a faster way even with a traffic jam. So I am guilty of causing the jamming jam...

Another note is the section before the James St exit, is actually 100 km/h zone. Ppl tend to go 80 way way before.

And the modification to the traffic at the James St exit some time ago is really a joke, the council must be thinking "Nah, not much traffic will come through this way?". Guess what the traffic jam is also caused by the 5 star redesign of the road and traffic at that exit.

If they have visitors and infrequent users in mind when designing it, they would have catered for these people like in, you guessed it, countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong. They have cards for visitors. The Hong Kong system is alot better, you can use the card to go shopping, go into 7 eleven buy some goodies, swipe the card. It is very nice design.

Cool so your saying you wait atva bus stop there flag down a bus and they give you a card
Naa didnt think so trust me first you know you need a card is when they tell you they dont take cash has knobs on it.
Trust me our system of both is light years ahead
You need a card in new york and they need someone full time explaining the vending system to visitors.
Problem with perth people is they can never see when we get it right fompared to other places

Ahhhh easy to say. I like the idea of park and ride but usually you can't get a park at the train station unless you are there first thing in the very early morning. I tried it several times but for my nearest train station the cat park is always totally booked out.

With only 6 weeks to go I am getting excited.......not because I am a big fan of Santa but because this xmas the first time ever since I left Europe (and that was a long time ago) a close family member is coming over for a visit. Ahhhhhh I have to be on best behaviour because I am sure everything without fail will go back to my parents. So I am excited and a bit ........how to say......a bit mmmmmmmmm .......how to go about it this time. Having a friend at home is one thing........a close family member an entirely different story.
However.......I think I came up with a rather pleasant (for both sides) solution........camping trip for 2 weeks down south. :D........European city person meets Australian sort of outback.......:p
What are you guys up for xmas?

im a professional driver and yes certain areas are congested but when you have a think about it most of the problems could be overcome with proper road planning. eg freeway south millions spent for extra lane leach to roe hwy to ease bottleneck result bottleneck is relocated roe to armadale rd but now worse because 5 lanes become two.wat genius worked that out.how many times has the esplanade been ripped up in the city over the past 10-12 years my reckoning about 4 times at the same time wellington st has not operated properly for much of that time.include the the other two east- west streets north of the line roe and newcastle which have had work done 4 much of this time also and little wonder congestion occurs when work is ongoing at once.mitchell north congestion is mainly the adding of extra lanes.roe highway and tonkin highway is just poor layout design with interchanges.and it goes on we simply need road planners who have a ten to twenty year vision not a two to five vision.if we had properly functioning arterial roads the congestion would ease in normal suburban areas because the rat running would lessen.

Have you tried catching the feeder bus to the station? Walking. Running.riding?
Catching a bus that gos to the city instead of the train?
Ive lived a few places in a couple of Capitol citys where some may say public transport is no option.
And yet ive had no issues getting in and out by bus. Train and obahn.
It just gets back to my original post
