If for example the elections recieve a record number of blank ballots, would that not be a message, a vote as such in itself, would that not show our lack of faith in the choices for government that we have been given?

I'd say not showing up sends a stronger message. Because you're willing to pay the price i.e the fine.
If you want them to know YOU are not happy with the choices your only option is to not go. In a way, it's a personal 'fuck you'. Because they have your name and address. A blank ballot is anonymous. You got your name ticked off so as far as they're concerned... you probably voted for someone.

Nah!!, not voting is not a good option.

People are quick to rear up proclaim their "rights" but are not so eager to acknowledge that rights come with responsibilities.

The right to choose our leaders via the ballot box comes with the responsibility to front up on polling day and, ideally, to give some thought to which candidate or which party we want to lead us for the next 3 years. It is a privilege many people in this world are denied and one which deserves a bit better than mindlessly voting the way Dad did or just numbering 1,2,3,down the paper (donkey vote.)

I bet there are more people out there who could name every player in their footy club's last grand final team than could name their local State or Federal M.P.

Wait... is it a privilege or a right? Two different things.
I think technically it's a privilege... because 'it' can be taken away. Here in Australia you don't get to vote if you are serving 3+ years in prison. Don't think you can vote if you're homeless either.

I'll say it again... mindlessly voting for whoever, or putting in a donkey vote is very different to choosing not to vote at all. And voting for someone you don't think deserves your vote is irresponsible.

Books are always better than the movie. Though I must admit The Lord of The Rings was eerily as I envisioned it when I read it. But the other 99.9% of movies just don't cut it compared to the book.

I din't like The Lord of the Rings movies (well I should say movie as I didn't make pass part one). My dislike has nothing to do with the books (did read them best part of 15 years previous to the P.Jackson movies so the gap between imagination and the movie was big enough) it was too full on for me. Screen was to busy......your brain didn't get a chance to recover. And it was certainly too long for me. I got really restless after 2 hours which REALLY annoyed my neighbours to the left and right.

Actually the girl with the dragon tattoo movies are good.......talking about the Swedish production.........didn't like the American one (again only part one.)

"Don't think you can vote if you're homeless either."

Was just on the news tonight. Homeless people can vote. The address is the local communitiy centre. Apparently there hasn't been enough effort to get homeless people a chance to vote in the previous elections so this time the communities make sure that the homeless can have a "voice" too.

"People are quick to rear up proclaim their "rights" but are not so eager to acknowledge that rights come with responsibilities."

Very true, Svengali. When ever I announced my dis-satisfaction with the parties and the candidates I protest voted. And even if they can't tell it was me at least my vote won't get distributed between the parties (that's what happens in Germany if people don't vote) but ends up in its own category of protest voters in the final count.

Ahoy;- The american dragon tattoo movie was well done its a good film, the Swidish film is very interesting as well but I perfer the American verision;- The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Swedish: Män som hatar kvinnor – literally – Men Who Hate Women) is a 2009 Swedish drama thriller.
If you get a chance, watch this film its German and its very interesting movie;-
Combat Girls (original title "Kriegerin", the German term for a female warrior) is a 2011 German drama film written and directed by David Wnendt. It had its international premiere at the 2011 São Paulo International Film Festival where Alina Levshin was awarded as best actress.

I too didn't like the Lord Of The Rings movies a total overrated borefest from start to finish. I read the first book and found that to be a total borefest also.

My favourite author is H.P Lovecraft. At Mountains Of Madness, The Call Of Cthulu, The Thing That Should Not Be... etc

Have to agree with you, colzilla.
I did finish the books but it took me ages to get into it. Guess fantasy stories are not my cup of tea.

If you vote Liberal on Saturday, you'll be voting for:
The capping of superannuation at 9% instead of 12%
The reduction of the tax free threshold from $18,000 to $6,000
The reintroduction of the non means tested health rebate
The reduction in funding for schools
The reduction in health funding
The destruction of our environment
The destruction of the world class NBN
The PPL that benefits 50,000 women to the detriment of 9,000,000
The elimination of the Carbon Price and all its benefits
The elimination of the MRRT so the miners get richer
The elimination of pay increases for aged care workers
The elimination of Medicare Locals
The deferral of marriage equality
The elimination of the schoolkids bonus
The attacks on unions and the workers they represent
The reduction of wages and conditions
The reduction in productivity
The death of the car industry in Australia
The death of the ABC as we know it
The increase in Murdoch's media ownership
The loss of our AAA credit rating
The increase in unemployment
The increase in the GST
The elimination of the low income super contribution
The increased cruelty to refugees
The embarrassment of Abbott and Bishop on the world stage
The embarrassment of Hockey and Robb in control of the economy
The deceitful, immoral, dishonest Brandis as Attorney General
The elimination of the World Heritage listing in Tasmania
The elimination of the Marine Parks legislation
The investment in roads rather than public transport
The robbing of the poor to give to the rich
The forcing of public schools to become independent
The further erosion of TAFE and trades training
The march towards Uni for the rich, started under Howard
The increase in dishonesty, deceit, hubris and obfuscation
The decrease in social equity and a fair go for all
The ownership of our media in even fewer hands, representing only the interest of billion dollar corporations.
I personally want to keep my rights at work (what's left of them), the NBN, the $18,000 tax free threshold, 12% Super, action on climate change, the push toward renewable energy, and all the rest. What is there to vote for with Abbott? Really, some people may not want to vote Labor, that's up to them, but what possible reason would anyone have to vote FOR Abbott? I can only think of one group of workers who would benefit in any way by him being elected PM: stand-up comedians.

This give some insight to the way Clive runs the ship

PRIME ministerial aspirant Clive Palmer is leaning on employees at his Queensland Nickel refinery to show their "commitment to the company" by staffing polling booths on Saturday for candidates in his fledgling political party.

In an email that has outraged some of the 800 employees at his wholly owned refinery near Townsville, the businessman warned that it was vital for the success of two local Palmer United Party candidates - both senior managers at Queensland Nickel - that they hand out how-to-vote cards on election day.

The email was sent on Monday after workers failed to respond last week to another email from the businessman's nephew, Queensland Nickel managing director Clive Mensink - who is second on PUP's Senate ticket in Queensland - calling for volunteers to staff the booths.

Well I've just voted yet I couldn't decide who to vote for, so being the responsible and hormonally stable male that I am, I used the same system that has worked so well at Langtrees, I found the girl with the nicest smile in a cute T-Shirt handing out brochures and voted for her, I really hope she becomes PM :)

Hey I understand..:p.
But I find my life consists of working at Langtrees,
On my off days......
Doing stuff with my Family
(we are a very close knit extended family)......
Delighting in ending up on my couch (that is also my bed)
lying down watching all my series...
I save the series until I can watch it at one go
(I have my issues - that's another thread!)...
and Tuesdays doing the laundry for my households
(Camelot, No 83 and my darling daughters!)

Are your lives as exciting as mine?

I probably have 9 or 10 series i D/L and follow religously. With the season breaks, they line up nicely :)

I'd give The Spokes Woman a bit of a $160 - 200 for 30 minute poke.
A bit past it but looks like a bit of a goer
