With the technology these days (metal detectors) finding a needle in a haystack is probably not too hard. Finding anything in these conditions and in such a huge area, even with all the technology in the world must still be extremely difficult.

Well, I thought the military guy on the T.V. the other night summed it up best. He said something like "We are not looking for a needle in a haystack, we are still trying to find the haystack.

Once a ship manages to fish some of that debris on board and it is identified as wreckage from MH370 the real search will start. Those sonobouys the aircraft have been dropping will provide some limited information as to the direction and strength of currents, wind etc and some very clever people and computers will use that information to try and backtrack to the point of impact It could take years as that is one very wild and inhospitable piece of water.

Also do not forget that no-one knows accurately when the plane hit the drink - calculations based on the fuel carried are little more than educated guesswork.
