Who suffers from insomnia?

I had a few years where I would wake up around 3am every morning.

I worked out just laying there thinking about problems and trying to get back to sleep made it worse, so I would get out of bed and do some work, watched youtube videos or read a book for a while.

When I found myself starting to get tired again I went back to bed and usually fell back to sleep for a few more hours.

Chiropractor told me to lift my chest a bit and since then I am out like a light usually. If I can't sleep I get up and do something until I feel tired as otherwise I'll just lie there for ages not being able to sleep.

I have seasonal insomnia. If its a warm night and/or its light early I normally struggle to sleep. If I toss and turn for a while I read the news and then if I still cant sleep I get up for an hour or so. This can go on for a few days so I get really tired then I crash at the weekend. Medication doesnt work for me.

If I start early mornings I worry about sleeping through the alarm . So I might get a few hrs sleep then lay there for the rest of the night . Or if I'm stressed about my kids then I'm awake on and off most of the night .

I stay awake most nights till I can barely keep my eyes open, then once I climb into bed and am out like a light, only to wake an hour or two later :(
I then toss and turn for hours unable to fall asleep again.
I normally just get up and start my day, i repeat this pattern for days until I am so eXhausted I will eventually get one full nights sleep and then start the pattern all over again.

That's hard going! Try Restavit once you go out it keeps you out. It's available over the counter at any chemist. I only take half a tablet......

Sounds corny, but try a simple meditation practice to reduce stress before sleep. Most insomnia is caused by inability to let go of rumination and anxiety. It's pretty easy to turn your brain off at night if your worries have reduced to zero.

Medicines are temporary fixes that ultimately make the problem worse. If you can teach your body to relax without them then you can solve it long term.

Also get tested for sleep apnea. I have a genetic predisposition for it. I addressed it and stopped waking up in the middle of the night and feel 100 times more rested when I wake up. It's truly life changing and about 1 in 5 people have it often without knowing about it.

I was curious of my sleep pattern at night so bought a second-hand Garmin fitness watch. It monitored my O² level and pulse rate.
In the morning I looked at the graph to see my light, deep and REM sleep duration. I'm about normal for each level of sleep over a night just the occasional bad night.

I take one of these per night, it helps me. I struggle to sleep and stay asleep. If I need the extra boost I also take half a restivit. I usually do this when in resetting my sleeping pattern from night shift ☺️

Been there and done that, unfortunately no sucess, also tried Melatonin to no effect as well 🤷‍♂️

Who suffers from insomnia?
I have problems sleeping 6 months of the year and would like to know other peoples solutions I hate the thought of taking sleeping pills
I do have the problem sleeping straight 6 hours or more after my son's birth.
I later found out it is not insomnia, it is sleep apnea, and therefore, I have difficulty having peaceful sleep throughout the night.
The only way out of it is medicines, and since I was reluctant to have the pills, I am going through a few sessions with a psychoanalyst and having good results too!

At least now I don't wake up in the middle of the night feeling lost, and don't fall asleep on desks at work. It's a real struggle, though, since a lot of people weren't/aren't aware of what sleep apnea looks like. It's scary when you know your brain forgets to breathe and function!

If anyone is interested let me know here, I would share another story of my life that caused people to take advantage of me in a bad way!

Have you tried a CPAP machine Anna?

Once you get used to the mask it makes a huge difference to your sleep quality.

The trick is finding the mask that works best for you.

Yes, I did.
I was admitted to the hospital for one night, and they had all the machines and stuff attached to various areas of my body. To record the sleep pattern and then they suggested CPAP machine to clear the air pathways. I still find it difficult to use. Seems like I have a lot to think about and take a note on while trying to be asleep

But now that you say the trick lies in the fact that you need to find the perfect mask that works for you, I think that's where it failed. Will probably have to try harder next time. But, honestly, to me attaching that while sleeping seems to be a huge task especially with a toddler by your side!

Thanks BDW!

Yes that would be a challenge if a toddler kept trying to take it off.

Also probably not a sexy look for a young person, but I am old so it doesn't bother me :)

I tried many masks until I found the one that works for me so it takes a bit of perseverance but you do get used to it eventually.

I found that nasal pillows that sit just under your nose with a light headgear worked best for me.

The other thing is their is a machine called an APAP that adjusts the air pressure automatically depending on what your breathing needs, but they can be more expensive than the set pressure CPAP machines though.

In Australia a lot of the sleep clinics will let you hire a machine and mask for a while to get the best combination that works for you but not sure about India.

It was truly life changing for me and I have been using it for many years now and can't sleep without it.

Good luck with it.

thanks for the info. I will try it in India and definitely let you know if it works

I have severe sleep apnea. Feel a bit better after using the sleep apnea machine. Apparently the splint for sleep apnea not very good. I think I had sleep apnea in my teens or even earlier as I've always woken up tired.

I know how that feels

Insomnia's not very nice when you go to bed at 10pm exhausted and then still awake at 4am. Then have to get out of bed 8am. I was like this in my late teens and twenties.
