Did you know VW is now the largest car producer in the world. Toyota was in front until a year or so ago. VW also own Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini and I think Bentley.

The modern day VW are a great car and the bug and combi are a icon of the motor industry.

I do have wireless internet at home and for the last 8 weeks the connection turned to shit. Whenever I write an email/pm/post the bloody connection goes west and I lose whatever I have written. Somehow the connection never lasts longer than a few minutes even when the signal is strong. Professional (?) explanations seem to vary depending who I ask. My provider thinks it is the area........Dick Smith thinks I should change the provider.........a friend recommended a so called buster.......(mmmmm my provider and D.Smith think it won't make a difference)
Has somebody on the forum experienced similar difficulties and/or has got an idea what I could do to get a decent connection?

Who is your provider/general area that you're in?
It is most likely that there are too many people on the network in your area, causing congestion and dropouts due to the limited capacity available on the network.
If your signal is strong, a booster is a waste of time - You don't need a hand in finding in signal, you need to maintain a connection to that signal.

Unfortunately Rochelle, wireless connections are fraught with problems - and more often then not a solid explanation can not be given for their lack of reliability. Simply because there are so many variables. Hence the different opinions you've received to date.

I don't know what your situation is, but a wired connection is by far the better option. It's more reliable, and when something goes wrong much easier to troubleshoot.

A couple of things you could try though:

The obvious turning it on and off again - or even stopping the process you are on and refreshing.
If you have to have a wireless connection and your not on 4G, consider upgrading to the latest technology - especially if your only going to use it in the metro area.
Whilst Telstra has its problems and many critics, in my experience they have by far the best wireless network.

I reckon it depends on time of day, just like in the morning the freeway is jammed to kingdom cum and in the late afternoon. Peak hour traffic can cause speed issue in wireless internet. Say after school, all the kids rush home to jump on the net to play games, download stuff etc...that will affect your wireless experience. To get a more stable connection, you need broadband over the phone line or go naked...broadband.

Exactly.
There is only so much bandwidth a carrier will have available to everyone who is currently using that site.
Think of it exactly like traffic - When there is nobody there you can travel at maximum speeds, but when there is congestion speeds slow to a crawl. The exact same things happen with data on networks... With more users and more traffic on the network, the available space for each users is reduced and the time it takes to send/receive data is increased for all.

Farm Boy is with telsta ( no other option out here ) and I had this trouble two months ago it was a faulty modem , now take no notices if your computer tells that you have a strong connection that's only between the computer and the modem , its the modem to mobile tower that the issue , and by the way it helps if the modem is connected to a high gain antenna stuck up on your roof , the higher the better.

Maybe I should go back to a wired connection (never had problems before but don't have landline at the moment so hence the wireless connection). Don't really need a landline but there might be new deals on the market (last time I had a wired connection was 2008).
And yes it seems to be a time of the day thing as well. I am on the net atm and I didn't have any problems (knock on wood). During the day and in the late afternoon it seems to be far more difficult to get a constant and strong connection.
Guess I should check out the wired connection deals.

If you had a landline before on your premise, then you can join Naked broadband, which means you do not need a phone line to get broadband. A lot of ISPs do provide naked broadband services. But if you can wait another 10 odd years, the NBN fiber to the home will be available. lol

As someone who has worked for a few different ISPs, i would recommend NOT getting Naked DSL... you still have the line, its just the line rental is added to the internet price. Problem is, if you ever have a fault there are no guarantees theyll fix it. Fork out the extra $10 or so $$$, if you can, and go for standard phone and internet...

Buy an Apple iphone and use it as a hot spot to provide your internet connection.
Works for me here and in the eastern states.
Can't beat those iPhones!!

The tethering to an iPhone is an OK option but its quite slow on 3G so get a new 4G one, but it drains the battery quickly so phone should be plugged in, nothing worse than your battery running out when you're almost there...

Telstra are now releasing a digital service. You get a new digital modem/router (wireless and wired), and all local calls are included, plus its a faster connection. Mine should be installed next week (in the Rockingham area, so metro should be accessible). Might be the thing for you!

I just joined ClubTelco on their Metro unlimited plan for $40/month and phone for $30/month. Hopefully they are good. This is no contract no setup fee, just a $50 annual membership fee. So if their service is crap I can cancel anytime. I had Optus door knocker at my door the other day, I basically told the person to piss off nicely. He offered me $99/month for a Gigantus 300GB download quota + phone. LOL...I doubt Helstra has any better offerings.
