I think it's coming back to me now, mind must've blotted it out as it can with traumatic experiences sometimes. You know, when I didn't hear of another MAS prang.

What's with this coup and comrade bizzo? I hope you didn't come back a commie. Or worse, a Chardonnay-swilling socialist.

They say flying is safer than driving, well, is it? is it?

Yes, it certainly is, despite last year's high-profile tragedies: http://edition.cnn.com/2014/12/29/travel/aviation-year-in-review/

'In terms of crashes, 2014 has seen the lowest number in more than 80 years...

When air disasters happen, they make news. But on the whole, far fewer people die in plane crashes than in cars.

About 1.24 million people die each year on the world's roads...

By contrast, the deadliest year in aviation had 3,346 deaths... That was in 1972.'

Of course, it helps if you choose to fly reputable airlines. (As a Qantas shareholder, I urge you to fly Qantas, especially in high yield Business.)

I fly a fair bit (cattle class mainly) I've been on an A380, 787 Dreamliner and many others. 747 is still my favourite but at the end of the day they're all pretty much the same thing a seat in a metal tube with 2 or 4 bombs on each wing designed to give you a ride from A to B

It is a while since I was on a 747. Mostly it has been 717, 737, A330 and the 777 a couple of times. I'm keen to try the A380, just wish I could afford Business, but might have enough points to upgrade.

Depending on which airline you're flying, Premium Economy can be very good value for money if you buy during the occasional early bird or other sale, though at full price it's a marginal proposition IMHO.

Um, no. I want you and all other mugs out there to pay the full exorbitant Business fares so the company's revenue increases -- especially on long-haul routes -- and I can be less embarrassed about saying I'm a Qantas shareholder.

I've only been loitering here for less than a year (I know, I know, seems like an eternity), so I missed out on that spectacle.

Slightly off topic. I am doing some work up north at the moment. Anyway towards the end of last year I was up at Curtin RAAF and I saw an Antonov. It was delivering helicopters for some tour operators in Broome.

Anyway, I was fortunate enough to get right up close to the aircraft. Unbelievably impressive.

It is powered by six turbofan engines and is the longest and heaviest airplane ever built with a maximum takeoff weight of 640 tonnes. It also has the largest wingspan of any aircraft in operational service.

I thought all shareholders would have felt the collective hatred we were psychiclly sending your way

So who gets the better deal The Qantas counter chick who gets cheap flights and discounted flights for family Or the hard working gent who bought shares for his retirement portfolio

Yes the 747 is more or less done and dusted but I still like its body shape the best maybe I like it because it was what I flew in my younger days when flying was still an adventure and not just a glorified mass transport system as it is today!

My very first flight was on a Dan Air comet from London to Cyprus to visit my older brother who was working there.
My second flight was on a Qantas 747 from London to Sydney via Bombay and Perth in 1974! A one way ticket when as a young man I migrated to Australa. Now that was a real adventure!

Yes a lot has changed in air travel over the years and what was once an adventure is now nothing more than a glorified taxi ride.

What hasn't changed in air travel over the years is the same announcements by the cabin crew on how to fasten your seat belt.

I think it is safe to say that anybody who is taking a flight is familiar with the concept of how seat belts work.
