What did your surgeon recommend re massage etc post operatively? I would recommend checking that out first.

Sort of thing that I wouldn't discuss with a surgeon, just that my back is sore, can't lie on my stomach at the moment, so everything in moderation, maybe just have to be more patient or take more pain killers I guess.
Also I think the Surgeons are more about how I am after the operation.
