Marty Sheargold's Comment Undermines Women's Health

Recently, Triple M host Marty Sheargold made deeply insensitive comments about endometriosis, claiming the condition was "made up" and that women "just carry on." His remarks not only disregard the lived experiences of countless women but also reinforce harmful stereotypes that have plagued women’s healthcare for centuries. Endometriosis is a serious and often debilitating condition affecting one in nine women, yet it remains widely misunderstood and underdiagnosed due to persistent medical bias.

Sheargold’s statement echoes what many women hear when they seek medical advice—dismissal, disbelief, and accusations of exaggeration. Women’s health issues have long been stigmatized, with doctors historically attributing their pain to hysteria, anxiety, or simply an overreaction. This systemic bias has led to delayed diagnoses, misdiagnoses, and inadequate treatment, forcing many women to suffer in silence. Endometriosis, in particular, takes an average of seven to ten years to diagnose, often because women are told their pain is "normal" or that they are just being overly sensitive.

When public figures dismiss conditions like endometriosis, it fuels the societal belief that women’s pain is not real or not worth addressing. This discourages women from seeking medical help and emboldens healthcare professionals who already minimize their symptoms. The media has a responsibility to challenge these harmful narratives rather than perpetuate them. Instead of dismissing endometriosis, we should be advocating for better research, faster diagnoses, and greater awareness to ensure that women’s health is taken as seriously as it should be.

Good post.

If you don't have a clear, accurate and confident diagnosis of a condition, and your Doctor ever tells you that the pain you are feeling "is normal" it is time to see another Doctor.

Most Doctors are great, but they're human and it's still a job, so there's also many that are not good at their job and don't want to be there. It's always best if you can develop a good professional relationship with your Dr, as you need to trust each other, but there's nothing wrong with changing Drs or just asking for a second opinion... It's your body and it's important you listen to it.

I agree! My daughter has endo and it's been a journey to find the right specialist advice and support. So many Dr's don't understand the condition and can't be stuffed making the effort to learn. It's a debilitating condition.

Would the Audience agree here if a Woman is facing female issues, wouldn't it be better or best for her to see a Female Doctor in that field of medicine then the Doctor would truly understand what the female patient is advising during that consultation, after all who better knows the true workings and feeling of what Women face that is another woman...

I think that's partly true. There are some crap female Dr's too though.

I hope Marty was actualy fired , and didn't resign. That shows a strong/weak employer attitude too ..
I don't believe this kind of behaviour is only aired in public - it's entrenched and tolerated in the establishment culture.
Agreed. For years now we have listened to guys like this, Eddie Everywhere, Kyle Sandilands et al make unfunny jokes about subject matter that is guaranteed to offend people. When they get called out they make pseudo apologies whilst their bosses roll out the feather duster so as to not disturb the gravy train.

Having said that I grew up in a time when joking about the sort of things that are now strictly taboo were taken with a pinch of salt and laughed off as someone having fun and not deliberately setting out to hurt anyone. Depending on your own view point, for good or bad reasons, we don’t live in that world anymore and comments made by media personalities quite rightly are more heavily scrutinised. Whether Sheargold was trying to be funny or not he must have known, in todays environment what he said was going to be offensive and shouldn’t have been surprised that he was either shown the door or politely asked to open it himself and walk through it.

Whilst I’m at it, although he probably doesn’t make offensive commentary it’s a shame the same exit strategy can‘t be arranged for Dave Hughes … surely the most unfunny comedian ever foisted onto the media environment.
