I am a bit on the submissive side, and like the feeling of someone putting their hands around my throat. Not into being choked to unconsciousness or anything though...

Sure do Minxxy. At least once a week and when I am on top. When I am not far off, I give my partner the word and she will place her hands around my throat and squeezes. Yep, but like so many other things moderation is the key and never, never, never indulge in "breathplay" alone. Remember what it did for Michael Hutchence.

There are two basic mechanisms to choking. Compressing the neck generally , ie with a ligature, usually restricts and can close off the trachea preventing respiration. This induces lightheadedness but the sensation of fighting for air is not particularly pleasant. Manual stranglulation, as usually seen in the movies involves digging the thumbs into the hollow at the base of the throat with a similar effect.

Either method can leave bruises and, if the cartilidge of the trachea is damaged, ( it isn't that tough) you could have a nasty sore throat and even ongoing breathing problems. It is also possible to damage the larynx this way.

The second method is to restrict or close off the carotid arteries which can be felt pulsing on either side of the trachea. Trained martial artists target these rather than the trachea because unconsciousness is achieved much faster. It is sometimes called a "sleeper hold" because that is what it feels like. Not unpleasant but probably puts the lights out too quickly to have any erotic effect.

The nasty effects it can have, though, are a bit scary.

Depriving the brain of oxygen long enough to produce unconsciousness causes some level of cell damage and the longer the restriction remains the more damage is done.

Now, think of kinking a garden hose while you change a sprinkler. When you release it the water surges through at high pressure. Just suppose one of your cerebral arteries was a bit dodgy (maybe an anneurism you didn't know you had) this sudden surge in presure when the sleeper hold is released could rupture it causing a stroke.

If you had a bit of plaque in those same arteries (a very common situation) it could be flushed loose to block a smaller artery or vein somewhere in your brain, also causing a stroke.

Hey, if it floats your boat go for it but learn a bit about the anatomy of the throat and take care.

I have to admit I have never experimented on this but now I will to a small degree.

I only wish for firm hands around my neck and her grinning at me because she has complete control as she sends me up to heaven and back.

Although I've found choking to be a fantastic enhancer for my partners, much like aussie_single said , for me it's more about the submissive state you put your play partner into having a nice large hand on her throat and most of my past partners have loved it. Breath play like anything should be done in moderation as it can have long term effects done too much but a nice controlled hand around the throat does no damage.

Personally I find it extremely erotic and the words you have written are completely true. I'd say it all depends on what she likes about it. The pain or the lack of air. I'd say to make sure you remember not to squeeze the neck from the sides, rather, put pressure (WITH A FLAT HAND. Don't be using sharp bony parts of your hands on the neck. Spread the pressure on the biggest part of your palm) on the front of the neck. Be sure not to do it top high up the neck. It should be closer to the shoulders than the face. For me personally, this is the ideal way to do it, no pain or very little pain. Be sure to talk to each other about how to know when it's too much. Absolutely! Even if I then ask him to Fuck/toy/finger me harder it's still kept at the same pressure.

One night the thought of a bit of choking (mild) leading up to my orgasm really turned me on, so I asked and he delivered but that was the last time. Losing consciousness decreases brain-wave (EEG) indicators of cognitive control and increases activity in low frequency EEG bands associated with trance and lack of thinking, esp. theta band activity (Mukamel et al., 2014; Purdon et al., 2013)

Most of the work done on getting choked out comes from Judo where they have been able to do all sorts of measures.
  • Being choked out, in judo, increases activity in those same low frequency bands (Rau, Raschka, Brunner, & Banzer, 1998) consistent with… wait for it… losing consciousness. And yes, this was a judo study of choking people out.
  • Judoka (judo people), who regularly get choked out, have normal brain function. This was different from boxers who have abnormal brain function. (Rodriguez, Vitali, & Nobili, 1998)
