ALI MOORE, PRESENTER: An Iranian actor sentenced to a year's jail and 90 lashes for appearing in a South Australian film has been released from prison in Iran.

Marzieh Vafamehr starred in the film My Tehran For Sale, which criticised the Iranian government.

It's understood one reason she was arrested in July was for showing her head uncovered.

Following an appeal, her sentence was overturned and imprisonment reduced to three months.

KATRINA SEDWICK, ADELAIDE FILM FESTIVAL DIRECTOR: We're obviously very, very relieved. We got word a couple of days ago that without notice the appeal had been heard last Monday.

ALI MOORE: The Adelaide Film Festival funded the project, which premiered in 2009.

The festival says it will continue to support Iranian films in the future.
