Many humans have a tendency to avoid and procrastinate if they associate pain..fear...or loss to something.

Probably for the same reason that some women are afraid to see a doctor about a lump in their breast, they are afraid of the wost case scenario. There's a friend I'm dealing with who's in such dilemma with her breast. Luckily the lump isn't growing and most are benign but still needs to be checked out.

Nobody likes bad news, but if there is a problem, or a potential problem, much better to get it dealt with as quickly as possible. Having said that, men, including me, are always reluctant to see a doctor, except maybe for injuries, perhaps because we perceive it as unmanly. I know at work we men are now being urged to see our GP.

cos most guys have a "wait long enough and it will go away" problem...

a good mate of mine had that.. and he waited.. well he waited so long that one nut went away....

I too have noticed this. Cancer has cut a swathe through my family so I am ultra cautious, no sunbaking (boring anyway) decent diet and a finger up the clacker every 6 months or so for the prostate.

While surfing the net one day I came across a video of a man undergoing a penectomy because of cancer. The end of his penis was reduced to a golf-ball sized lump of necrotic tissue and I wondered just how the hell he could have let it get so far before seeking help.

Guess everybody is scared of bad news but honestly I really rather go to the doc too much than once not early enough.
And there would be no time wasted if it comes to my private parts or lumps in my breasts. It is not going away......even when we think it might.....so let's face it and get in there early.
It certainly helps when you are aware of your family history..........so good on you svengali to keep up with it.

I think when it comes to any health-related matter, the worst possible news is "If only you'd come here twelve months/six months/two years ago, this would have been a really easy fix...But, now.... (GP does the slow sigh thing before delivering the bad/physically invasive/long treatment regime news)..."

Cancer got my mum. She left it way too late before seeing her GP. Whether going early would have saved her life, we'll never know, but it would surely have improved her chances.

I discovered a lump in my ex's breast about 5 years ago. She said oh, I have an appointment in 3 weeks, I'll get it checked then. I had her into the doctor the next day. When I tried to make the appointment, the receptionst said sorry the doctor is booked for 4 weeks. So I started explaining what I'd found and women that were waiting stood up and offered me their appointments so I got my ex in that day. It turned out to be the worst type on the cancer scale. It grew from a pea size to a golf ball size within a week, within 7 days she was having surgery then chemo. She survived it all but it was a really tough year. Mostly they are benign but as her doctor said to me, the results could have been bad had we not acted immediately.

Good on you Dallas. I admire your insistence. What a difficult time you both, friends and family must have had and it could have been worse. I'm glad it had the outcome it did.

Thanks Tania, it was the toughest thing I've ever gone through in my life yet I didn't realise that there was something tougher for me ahead. Her doctor told me that most male partners leave their wives while they are going through this. I told her that I would stick by her until the end, but a year later when I thought we were going to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary, she left :(

I wouldn't hesitate to do the same thing again.. not just for a partner, but for anyone. I know a w/l at the moment who's got a sizable lump and I've been trying to get her to have it check out but she's scared which is understandable.. .so am i !

I guess it's a stigma that stuck in your head like glue from childhood. As a child, your parents would often bring up the needle and doc with evil smile gorking at ya. It's pretty bad to use this to coerce one to eat their vegie or fruits, at a very young age. From then on, goin to the doc becomes a bad thing that almost always bears bad news. It's as bad as goin to the dentist.

News not knowing are news less we worry, till one day we go 6 ft under. Looking from above or below with regerts...and cursing.

I agree johnlou especially if the person has nobody to support them and there are a lot of people that don't. Nothing worse that being scared and feeling that you are on your own.

For a forum that's supposedly designed to talk about sex with clients and working ladies, there are a lot more genuine people on here than I've found on most mainstream websites.

I have lost a couple of close friends to the big scary C. In both cases I would put it back to the relaxed attitude of the medical profession........ohhhhh that is nothing only an upset stomach. It will go away.......ohhh still there.....mmmmm might be an infection why don't we go with antibiotics....to cut long story short by the time they (the doctors) finally took it seriously the tumor on the stomach had nearly blocked the ability of food intake.
Guess what I am saying is that if you know something is wrong which goes pass the painkillers and antibiotics keep hassling the medical profession. Nobody knows better what is going on in your body than yourself.

I completely agree Rochelle! The amount of times I've heard the medical profession do that, I always get pushy with them when I know there's something seriously wrong. At least they take breast lumps seriously now..

Maybe we all have to watch "the doctors" or.....hang on what is the guy called.........Dr. Oz?????? plus a bit of google research and here we go.......self surgery and medication.
Sorry to sound so cynical but I had it just recently that I basically told my GP what I think needs to be done next............and the GP agreed which doesn't make me feel better because if I would have told the GP another story would he/she agree to it as well just to get rid of me???????????
Come on guys let's study medicine and become doctors.........:D

Dr Chris Brown that is. Self medication and diagnosis can be a danger though.

Self medication is fine if you cut your finger while pruning the roses or have something simple like a common cold. For anything else, go to your doctor, for he/she is the expert. If you are unhappy with a particular diagnosis, or feel that the doc has not taken you seriously, seek a second opinion.

That is sometimes easier said than done, Lingham, not to mention the extra costs that some people are not able to carry. Where is the old family GP who knows you from young age on and actually takes time to get things worked out. Sometimes it might require a second or a third return visit but at least it is work in progress. Going to a new GP whenever I am not happy with the diagnosis is like starting from square one all over again.
