We often hear the argument My cities better than...

But I thought to make it a less parochial straw poll how about
Which is your favourite city and it must be a city other than your home town or capital

So for me it is a toss up between Melbourne and Adelaide

Melbourne may win as it has less Pirates

Melbourne is my vote always something to do when on holidays.
I've always thought of South Australia as a space you travel through to get somewhere decent.

Melbourne's Yarra river is a pale imitation of the Swan
But they have made it part of the city It's full potential is used
I wonder why Perths founding fathers built the city with its back to the river

This is an interesting question asking for a very subjective set of answers.

I grew up in Fremantle and love it for it old nooks and crannies, but they are now being ripped out to endlessly extend the cappuccino strip, so the old Freo is mostly gone.

I loved Perth as a gentle, friendly, sleepy place, but now they are busy remaking it in Sydney's image (but a pale imitation !).

I loved Melbourne as a centre of the arts, but now they are remaking it in Sydney's image.

I loved Sydney as a place where there was always something happening, but now they are remaking it in Melbourne's image.

So I have to vote for Adelaide as 'Perth without the mining boom' !

But if you don't like peace and quiet - then a whole different set of answers !

Cheers.

Canberra… The world’s most liveable city Posted 14 January 2015 That’s right folks. Canberra is the reigning liveability world champion. I know that tends to upset some our friends in Sydney and Melbourne but surely the esteemed Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) can’t be wrong? The OECD recently released its Regional Well-Being Report 2014. Canberra ranked number one out of 362 regions across the 34 most developed countries in the world. Take a bow! The report is part of the OECD Regional Well-Being initiative, which recognises that the world needs to go beyond GDP and economic statistics to get a better measure quality of life. It uses eight indicators of well-being: Income Health Safety Accessibility of Services Civic Engagement Education Jobs Environment Canberra scored highly in all eight indicators, achieving over nine points (out of a possible ten) in all areas, with a perfect ten for income, safety and civic engagement. Well-being is important for living a full and healthy life. People with a high sense of well-being are more satisfied, interested and engaged. They have more energy to look to the future and are ready to pursue their dreams. So it’s with enormous satisfaction that we step up to the dais, wave to the crowd and accept our gold medal. Not only is Canberra the world’s most liveable city, but we’re confident, bold and ready. Make sure you come and visit soon. - See more at: http://www.canberra.com.au/canberra-the-worlds-most-liveable-city/#sthash.zvV45skS.dpuf

NO!
Did anyone really care in Canberra? Or was it just another day off
And what of the rest of the territory No recognition of them Only Canberra ? Sounds typical to me

A debate never to be resolved I suspect. Having lived in Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Brisbane and Perth (only included capital cities I have lived in) I can bring some objectivity to the discussion I hope. I think the "best city" to live in depends on your stage of life, interests and where you loved ones are. All the above have alot going for them. Great places to live with great memories;
  • Shopping at Salamanca for the best fresh fruit and vegetables in the country on a crisp clear still winter's morning with snow settled on Mt Wellington in the background.
  • Wandering down Caxton street in Brisbane before the deciding State of Origin match copping heaps from the Cane Toads (yes, I'm a cockroach).
  • Chilling out on Tamarama beach the morning after a riotous madi gras night in Sydney.
  • Bar hopping in Melbourne city after a win by the Wallabies over the British Lions at Docklands.
  • Riding the boom…... and bust in Perth for the last decade.
Would I live in all of these places? Absolutely and more to boot in this country! For me there is no clear winner as Ive loved every one of them. I think we are very lucky to be blessed with such choice.
Cheers

LONDON, PARIS FLORENCE ROME PARIS - oh in Australia ummmmmmmm - ok, Melbourne - Little Burke street is great!! Perth once had a beautiful sky line but now seems to be under threat with development.
Least fav is definitely Canberra - after all our esteemed rulers reside there and argue over what we need and should have without actually effecting change - Only place in Australia where every ones hands are in someone else's pockets lol
