For the men, when was the last time you had someone play with your bum and check for prostate cancer? For the women, when was the last time you let someone have a feel of your boobs and check for breast cancer?

If it`s been over a year then get straight down to your family doctor and ask them to check.
Don`t leave it too long...

No ifs, buts or maybes... Do it.:eek:ccasion14

Last time I had mine checked I thought I would lighten the mood by telling the Doc a joke about it, but he knew many more jokes than I did! He offered me a two fingered examination in case I wanted a second opinion!

Ah yes, the dreaded finger poke.

For men and women the most important thing to know is your family history. If, like me, the "big c" has seen off both of your parents and had an unsuccessful go at a couple of your older siblings then take no chances. I now get poked and have a psa test every six months. It isn't the most fun I have had with my pants off but it beats the hell out of finding out too late.

Everybody who hasn't been checked do so
By the time a lump in the breast has been seen/felt it may have been growing for for quite a few years
as someone very dear to me discovered

Its not that bad JasRob Think of all the punters who want the girls to do Greek
Hopefully your docs finger is smaller than what the punters want to stick in

Do female doctors do prostate checks? Their fingers would be smaller and it may make it a little less uncomfortable.

Any qualified G.P. can do it but most men, myself included and, I suspect, most women would prefer a doctor of the same sex for dealing wih such (ahem) intimate matters.

I'm 25 never had the inspection don't think I need it at my age? My doctor is female and like previous posts have mentioned, I would prefer someone of the same sex to perform a check. My old man is old school I don't think he will ever had a prostate check ever in his life. I would probably have one done if i was older.

Tell your old man to have the PSA test It may not be as good as digital (What is or we would still have analogue TV) examination
But it is still better than It wont happen to me

Amen to that. I think the current advice is that men need to start having regular (annual) checks from the age of 45 onwards but it depends on your family history. Mine stinks so I go six monthly. The P.S.A. test on its own is better than nothing but it is best combined with the dreaded finger poke. PSA can be affected by several non-cancer problems like infection so a high test needs to be repeated.

The limitation of the finger is that the Doctor can only feel the rear of the gland - roughly 30% of its area - so any nastiness up the front will be missed.

Any signs like blood in urine or semen should, of course, be checked out urgently. I had blood in my semen once so it was panic stations for a few days. My urologist suggested prostatisis (infection within the prostate) may be the cause so he prescribed some heavy-duty antibiotics and my next test in a couple of weeks was normal. Had it not been he would have ordered a biopsy which is the best and surest way of diagnosing the problem.

Finally - the surgery is much better these days and can be done via a laporoscope or the Da Vince machine with a much shorter recovery time and greatly reduced chances of complications like impotence or incontinence. Given an early diagnosis and treatment the survival rate is pretty good.

If you are over 40 my advice is get yourself and your bum over to the Doctor and get yourself checked. There are some ugly ways of dying and cancer is one of the worst

My old man is / was the same. After a solid 6 months of nagging from mum he caved in. Well whaddya know.... That was 2 or 3 years ago and fortunately he's OK now.

I think the Dr told me to get checked about 45 / 50. I've had fingers up my arse before and I'd much rather it belong to an attractive lady :p Being uncomfortable to 5minutes and potentially detecting a problem early is certainly much easy than telling your family your going to die

Svengali's advice on this matter is right on the money IMO. Family history very important and helpful information that can save lives. I had my cholestorol checked at 25 years old as we have a family history of it. 7.4.!! No diet or exercise was going to help with a result like that at that age, clearly genetic. I would have been dead by now had I not started on the medication.

Also I have a question....everyone is mentioning the poke is a one finger, short lived love affair...My check (also early at 30) was short lived and not painful and not as romantic as I'd hoped .. but I got 2 fingers, and it was all over in about a minute. Is it 1 or two normally?
