Just wondered how many horror or even light hearted stories there are About our hated but nigh on indispensible Credit cards

Only ask as I found only today someone had purchased about $900 worth of beauty treatment on my card
And anybody who has met me know this is a false purchase because I would need FAR more than $900 worth of treatment

You're not having a great run with the plastic fantastic, are you?

I think I've only had spurious charges appear on my credit cards a couple of times. The first one was in Perth (surprise, surprise) when a shady cabbie pretended to have trouble swiping my card in those olde swipe machines, and I omitted to recover the used carbon slip. Lo and behold, a $70-something taxi fare appeared on my next statement. My bank was put on the case and a few months later resolved the matter in my favour. I ended up closing that account soon afterwards anyway. A similar attempt was made some years later in Sydney and once again I was victorious against the taxi fraudsters, but of course my card had to be reissued.

Just over a year ago, after returning from an expedition to the Americas, some dolt tried charging my my pre-paid credit card, which only had a handful of US cents remaining on it, for a few hundred bucks in of all places Jaipur -- naturally it was declined. Unfortunately, I have never had the pleasure of visiting Jaipur, and I had never been to India with this card, so I figured one of the dodgy swarthy types who had served me along the way must have sold my CC number to a third cousin back in the old country. The pre-paid CC was duly cancelled.

So it can be a hassle but I haven't been out of pocket as a result of CC fraud.

If I have been suspicious about any transaction that I have just completed with an organisation, I have on two occasions, cancelled my card which has proved to be correct as they then sent me an email saying that my card was declined for a second amount that I never authorized in the first place. So quite lucky really

I've had credit card fraud 3 or 4 times. The worst was when I had my wallet pick pocketed in Athens. By the time I was able to cancel the card they'd ran up a few thousand $. Fair credit to my bank they refunded all of the transactions I identified as fraudulent.
Nowadays when I travel I take a second different card with me and keep it in a safe place for emergency use. It's a bugger being overseas and having your card closed down so I always take two now to be on the safe side!

My wife has no credit card now, or even access to our primary accounts, after knocking up $3000 on crap from late night t.v infomercials, etc, not once, but twice.:mad::mad:

Fraud though, only the once. Bank rang me and asked if I'd recently been to the US, San Pal.... something or other. Of course not I told them, funds were credited in a couple of days, $300 ish from memory. Card cancelled, etc.

Couple years ago mayb like 4 yrs bought big large screen TV used my credit card ,as that was only time i wasnt carrying $2000 cash on me,got a phone call 2 days later from bank security wanting to know if that was me that had made the transaction, yes it was ,
Apparantley when i was in thailand 12 mths earlier , when handing the card to hotel staff for their records some details were copied and a fake card was used at the time i bought TV But thsts all sorted out now
Just a side track from CC.I use prepay on my mobile.n 12 mths ago got a SMS ...it was a real polite one something like"" xcuse me sir but i mistakenally credited $100 to your mobile and would appreciate it if u could refund that amount back to me"" yeah sure i thought ,checked my balance n lo n behold $100 in there .so i thought WTF wat a kind person ,
Never knew the guys name n he only sent 1 more SMS which i ignored ...never heard ftom him again
I know CC's are useful n i only really use mine to pay my credit for my mobile ,but I'd rather not use it ,i dont have any need for much these days, but can see how people can rack up a hefty bill in no time

Well, some many moons ago...went overseas on a jet plane, had a good R&R. Months later after arriving back on home soil, got a call from the bonk asking if I've just used my CC in that cuntry. Gotta be careful with your CC even in a 5, 5 and a half star hotel.

Luckily I don't have a credit card (chose not to have one!!!!!!!!) because lately I am really bad with my eftpos card. Had to cancel it twice in the last weeks because I did leave the bloody thing in the cash machine outside the bank a couple of times..........and didn't realise it until 2 days later :jawdrop::mad: guess the person on the other end of the bank 'lost card' phone went more or less :singing: (that one again)
However I rather misplace an eftpos card without chip than a credit card.
sigh.......let's go back to the old trade........sheep vs vegetables :D:eek:

Credit card is the bank's tool to give you the idea that you have the $ to spend, till you get the bill and interest accumulated. It can be jaw dropping. It's like the bank is f***ing with your brain, telling it spend and worry about it later. When later becomes now, you know your f***ed from behind if you don't have the $ to pay for things you can't really afford.

My fave is the people who show of their Platinum credit cards as if its a wonderous trophy they have won
Rather than an invitation to be even more beholding to their credit masters

And they have become so prevalent -- even the riff-raff can get one -- that they've lost their cachet.

My fave was in my hotel in Puerto Varas A couple was checking in and the staff asked for his Passport That's easy done and everyday next his entry/travel papers (Only seen this in Chile This is issued on arrival and must be shown at every hotel you stay at Do NOT lose this if holidaying in Chile) Couple handed over these all good Then they asked for Credit card for incidentals
They couple said they do not have credit cards They were asked "How do you pay for things?" "Cash was the reply The concierge or whatever his title was gobsmacked did not know where to go from there His face was priceless

Last week I checked my bank accounts to find a mysterious amount of $79.95 charged to my C/C last Monday.
I thought I cleaned house all day...certainly did not make a purchase in Nth Sydney.
Rang the bank, they told me the company AVEDA CREDIT CHECK...does credit checks on people.
So some asshole got my C/C details and was trying to find out how much $$$ before they went shopping.
The bank cancelled my card, issued me a new one ,and will replace the funds in the next 8 days.It now becomes a matter for their fraud dept.
That was a close one!

I guess Aveda verified your details before goin ahead with credit check. The asshole got your details.
Sounds pretty scary when people can do this on your behalf and not share the result with ya...

And did AVEDA give you a good credit rating Cyclone?
I have no idea. Should be OK....I hate using credit cards. I am now going to to get my C/C limit reduced.
no point exposing myself unnecessarily. I know that when you drop credit that goes against you with credit checks.

Maybe your bank allows you, like the Commonwealth does and allow you to lock your card while not using it?

It's the opposite. I remember many moons ago, trying to get a home loan, my mortgage advisor, kept telling me to axe my credit in half...to raise my credit rating...and to hold only ONE credit card, only one?? I asked. :meh:

Yes, when you go to borrow money they assume your C/C is maxed out when doing the calculations for how much you can afford to repay on any loan.
Me, I have always borrowed the least and paid off the most. I hate wasting money on interest.

Yes, about 4 years ago my NAB credit card which supposedly had a cash advance limit set to $500 per day, had 12 x $880 cash withdrawals made at an Italian Casino within 20 minutes. NAB froze the card and contacted me and assured me that they'd reimburse me all the money and remove interest charges. They knew their system had failed although didn't admit it, but still, I was very nervous for the next 3 weeks waiting for it to be cleared.

Don't start me on banks.........they should not be allowed to speculate and to make a profit.........banks should be a commodity only.............
