So seems like in meeting apps, that there are people asking for your WhatsApp.

Are they trying just get a hold of your phone number in a less suspicious way so they can spam you with junk sms or for sum swapping. Noticed I did get more random spam, when I used give it out but now I refuse.

Some pretend make an effort with small talk 3 questions or so then ask for it, but others don't even try, after u say hello. Lol

Think some use other apps like wechat, messenger or anything like that. Beware

This was more to do with random people you chat to on social dating apps asking for to be added to WhatsApp.

Using WhatsApp to communicate with people you know is different story as it's just another communication method besides sms/text messages.

True. Think its all to do with getting hold of your number, then other details for fraud. So worried about sim swaps these days as alot of emails & even bank accounts are tied with your number or receiving sms to reset passwords

Asking to continue the chat after brief intro through WhatsApp appears less intrusive than asking someone for their number, although to be added to WhatsApp u need give your number. Wechat you can add without number but username.

On a less serious note but annoying is the spam sms after

How is asking for WhatsApp any different to asking for your mobile phone number? They're one in the same. Your mobile phone number is used as your ID for WhatsApp.

When you install WhatsApp it uploads your contact details to its servers and then you can see all your friends who also have installed WhatsApp.

Think its to do with perception. Usually I use WhatsApp to communicate with people I know. So if you chat to someone for awhile on one of those dating apps like tinder if they ask let's continue the convo in WhatsApp, some maybe less concern being added or don't give too much thought to it compared to someone ask your number.

These fraudsters are rather tricky. Anyway, something I was noticing recently having used these apps and chatting. Something people need be cautious about these days with giving out your number willy nilly

Would all these comments be similarly relevant to the LINE app?
Do they all work in a similar way?

Don't use line, but if you need someone's number to add them, then yes it would be same ploy to get your number. As mentioned wechat you can add someone by their username not need number

Line is very commonly used by the Thai’s. Chinese mostly use WeChat. They’re both similar in that you don’t need a phone number to add someone.
