so ive just been scrolling thru the forum reading the new posts that have been put up since i was last at work and 2 have really hit home for me... the fist one was one Sue posted about the WA pedophile ring where a father used is own daughter and the second was one posted by Aaron about an instagram video of a 12 year old girl mucking around and flashed the camera and someone decided to post it... i dont know why but reading these stories has really upset me and made me feel ill, perhaps its because i have 2 young daughters of my own and the thought of someone harming them is too much.. i dont know but,,, it just seems that i am hearing more and more horrific stories on the news . Its a very scary society that we live in and its sad that kids just cant be kids these days.

That's right, I don't think we as a species have gotten any worse; we're just a lot more aware of the depths of depravity surrounding us than we used to be thanks to modern technology. It is harder for these predators to conceal their activities for as long as they once were able to, such as similar crimes committed by members of the church, defence force, etc. Small consolation though. :(

I must confess that I have a lot of respect and admiration for the W/L because if it wasn't for these beautiful ladies doing what they do, there would be a lot more sex crimes in the world.
So ladies each and every one of you are doing a fantastic job.
And no dought saving society a huge amount in :)legal problems from these attacks

Rachy and I talked about this tonight. We agreed that it's not that it's happening MORE now days, but being reported on more and more with media and technology. Look at cases where things have happened 40 - 50 years ago and the predators are 89 in a nursing home !!!!

This is spot on.

The sad fact is that abuse like this is a cycle. There's much empirical evidence from studies of abusers that shows many were themselves abused as children.

Hopefully as society becomes more focussed on helping victims rather than covering up abuse, those victims will get the help and support that will short circuit that cycle and prevent fewer of those abused now from becoming abusers in adulthood.

There will be evil people always who hurt others for no reason other than for their own sick reasons but hopefully the vigilance of the right minded members of society will make it harder and harder for them to get away with it.

I must slightly disagree there AxeMan. Being abused as a child is a Risk Factor. It is not necassarily Causal. The vast majority of people that were abused as children do not become abusers as adults. Male or Female. And is fantastic how often that's the main concern. Leave out PTSD, dissociative disorder, anxiety, depression, suicide risk, and more. The ONE THING we must all be careful of is that he doesn't become an offender.

http://www.livingwell.org.au/managing-difficulties/addressing-the-victim-to-offender-cycle/

12% of men who were sexually abused in childhood went on to commit sexual offences. This is a significantly higher rate of sexual abuse perpetrated than by the general population of men, and is a serious concern that needs careful investigation. This is what we mean by risk factor — but it certainly doesn’t mean that men automatically go on to commit abuse. This is demonstrated by the 88% who didn’t.

As for getting help. The government provides a VERY generous package of 10 psychological consults per calender year at a heavy discount. And in private insurance (if you claim for nothing else) given what you pay, and what they cover, you're better off NOT getting private health cover.

So unless you are in a position to shell out thousands of dollars it'll cost each year for therapy, there is very little help out there.

EDIT: Added strikeout

I think you misunderstand me. I never suggested that all those abused go on to be abusers. That would be patently ridiculous.

But clearly the removal of a risk factor can have an effect on reducing the consequences of that risk factor.

And nothing I said suggests that any of the others effects of childhood sexual abuse should be ignored or in some way diminished in importance.

Sorry axeman, had the blinkers on. It's a very emotional topic.

Saw the word "many" and became blind to all else. I hope you understand.

Sadly Rachy this sort of abuse has been around for a long time. It has only come to light recently because it is no longer a tabu subject . Unfortunately though, many children suffer in silence because they are either threatened with other forms of punishment, or told that nobody is going to believe their story. I know this because I suffered as a child also.
