What ever happened to the simple smile

My sons are up here for Xmas This morning my eldest went to a shop in Northampton
First thing he noticed? A friendly smile and a bit of banter
He lives in Perth and found this interaction so refreshing
So is the city just to busy and hectic Or is he shopping in the wrong places
Maybe he was being served by pupils from our dear departed friend Colzillas school of charm?

Yes....most of us put ourselves in situations that focus on meeting the expectations set by society and others. And things get in the way of being ourselves.

Festive times in simple places brings out the greatest parts of us that are already there.

I think it depends where you go and it depends on the type of day someone might be having. I find it refreshing when you're greeted with a friendly smile cheery vibe, but I don't bother to expect it...and when it's not there I don't notice. But when it is, it's lovely.

The problem may be either the workers boss is telling the worker behind the scenes that time is money and the faster they can get get a customer served the faster they can serve another. If you were 2nd in the queue would you might waiting an extra 2-3 minutes to be served if it was your 30 minute lunch break??
What if the poor shop keeper tried to make conversation by simply asking how the customers day was only to be told it was either none of their business or if the customer proceeded to tell them the whole days activities started from when they woke up and took a dump.

He`s still here... he was simply suggesting a reason why some of us city folk may not manage to share a smile from time to time with you country bumpkins...

Hmmm how about the check out chicks in the city who talk over your head,to the lady on the next till, while serving you, about what they are up to on the weekend,,no manners, no hi, no smile,,,I shop in the city quiete often and find city staff more rude and unfriendly. When I get really good service I always ring management and let them know, especially because it's few and far between. :)

I believe that the grumpinest of people just need a smile and some kindness. They might not necessarily return it to me. But they will pay it forward to someone else.

I don't get why people are so pleasant this time of the year but can't do it all the time of the year.

A smile is contagious so EVERYONE smile and it will catch on.
As a lot of you know I am a Kiwi. One of the first things I noticed here was that nobody smiled or seemed happy. This was a big contrast from where I come from.
Being a woman I am a shopper and as silly as it may sound to some people I will shop where I get customer service even if it means the cost is higher.
In NZ there is still the odd service station that have staff working the pumps. I use to travel out of my suburb to go to these particular stations.
I never even got out of my car. The petrol was done for me and at no extra cost my windscreen was washed and oil checked. This particular service station was one of the busiest in town. Petrol was the same price as any other and everyone wanted a job there.

Try this one on....

Take your focus to your chest and be aware of your breathing as you approach strangers with an awareness of your heart and calmness with a subtle smile offered to strangers as you pass them by. You will both feel better. And it compounds as you get better at it.

That alone can save a life once in a while.
