Two Victorian victims of an online scam were threatened with having sexual footage of themselves released unless they paid money into an overseas bank account. Police say that in the separate incidents, the men believed they were communicating with a woman online and engaged in sexual behavior via the video call software, Skype.
The unknown woman then told the men they had been recorded and demanded cash be paid into a Moroccan bank account, otherwise the footage would be released publicly. Police say they do not know if the incidents are linked, but warn internet chat room and social media users to be careful about what information they share. Police warn personal details should never be provided and users should not allow themselves to be filmed nor reveal their location to strangers.
