Fifty years ago on August 5th movie star Marilyn Monroe succumbed to a drug overdose at the height of her career.

But the spirit of the quintessential blonde bombshell lives on through her legion of devoted fans from around the world who will this weekend gather to pay tribute to the sex symbol.

Australians were among 200 Monroe fans who attended the Immortal Marilyn Pool Party at the Hollywood Orchid Suites hotel, just two blocks away from Hollywood Boulevard, last week.

Fans around the world will honour Monroe's memory at several events, including a banquet at the 20th Century Fox studios and a memorial service at a Los Angeles Presbyterian church.

At the pool party, women dressed like extras from the 1960s hit show Mad Men, wore bright red lipstick and dangled long cigarettes from their fingers.

Guests included Ernesto Galindez, who claims to have the largest collection of Marilyn memorabilia in his native Venezuela.

His trove comprises cheques and other documents signed by the diva and, he claims, all of the magazine covers featuring the star.

Freelance writer Leslee Kasperozoicz, 34, said she attributes the enduring interest in Marilyn's life to the fact that the star was able to blend the beauty and fickle behaviour of a diva with a heavy dose of vulnerability.

One of the event stars was a Marilyn impersonator from the Netherlands who attracted a crowd of adoring fans.

Decked out in a single-piece light blue swimsuit, she flashed sultry smiles in a perfect Marilyn imitation.

Another Marilyn impersonator - or "tribute artist" as they like to be known - wore a green velvet dress, a replica of the gown the star sported in 1954 film River of No Return and performed a rendition of I'm Gonna File My Claim, which Monroe sang in the movie.

Did you know Marilyn Monroe was born with 6 toes on each foot and the spares surgically removed?

SMASH is Steven Spielberg's new series which I just finished watching in the US - it's kind of an adult/grown up answer to Glee which centres around 2 girls battling it out for the part of Marilyn Monroe which is being turned into musical... Love this song!

Marilyn Monroe is about to get the biggest 'marketing comeback' in history on the 50th anniversary of her death.

An American company that has paid more than £16million to acquire rights to her name and likeness intends to open beauty spas, cafes and prestige stores under the Monroe banner.

"People are no longer going to see her image on glasses, pens and cheap T-shirts. We are giving Marilyn Monroe's Magic Continues 50 Years On her a marketing makeover and I believe she can still be one of the greatest brands in the world," the Daily Express quoted Jamie Salter, chief executive of Authentic Brands, as saying. Four years ago Monroe, who died from a drug overdose 50 years ago on August 5 at the age of 36, was ranked ninth on Forbes magazine's annual list of top earning dead celebrities, with her estate earning £4m a year.

Within months of the Authentic Brands takeover last year, she rocketed to the number three spot, just behind legendary singer Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson, with earnings of £17.2 million.

"I believe she is still as famous as any celebrity alive and I am certain she would have been bitterly disappointed with the way her image has been handled since her death," Salter said.

"We are changing all that and she will be associated with designer boutiques, upscale health spas and a chain of chic cafes, and that is just the start. Her memory is worth more than slapping an old photo on seaside souvenirs," he added.

A bit like Che Guevara.......he seems to be more popular nowadays on T-shirts and posters than he has been when alive fighting in Bolivia.
The only thing is that usually the younger generation wearing the T-shirts has no idea who he is........viva la revolution :la:
