In the past 4 days I think I`ve past at least 4 broken down cars on the side of the road. Most have been left by their owner who may have gone to get more petrol or maybe even just gone to call the RAC, I just don`t know.
However this morning when I went past one I happened to see the owner playing under the bonnet.
Now should I have stopped to help?? I don`t know but considering I know nothing about cars but I think I may have been more in the way then anything else.
All I would have been able to do was help push.

What would you have done or has anybody ever come to your rescue??

I've stopped a bunch of times. Easy ones are changing a tyre, I've let people use my mobile because theirs had run out of battery or credit, I've pushed a few cars onto the sidewalk or into a side street to let the traffic flow.

If the bonnet is up then I often don't stop as there isn't much that can be done. Guys I usually don't stop for as boys can take care of themselves, but a female on her own or with kids I'd definitely stop for, even if just to check to make sure RAC or towie is on the way. If there's another car there already then I normally wouldn't stop.

Yup... I try to stop and lend a hand when I can. I've also found other motorcyclists are especially helpful. If you're on two wheels and on the side of the road someone will stop and ask if you're alright. I'd put money on it :D

If I see someone pushing I'll help and if it's a car I know a bit about I'll help but I wouldn't go out of my way to help someone change a tyre. That's something basic that everyone who holds a license should know how to do.

Funny thing about modern cars. They are so complex that only a mechanic can even find most of the bits which cause trouble but, for all that, and despite the lack of care and proper maintenance, they are pretty reliable. When I first started driving long distances "lame ducks" by the side of the road were a fairly common sight but these days they are a rarity.

Only snag is that when they do conk out only an expert like an R.A.C. man can do anything useful with them and even they often end up calling a tow truck.

I usually stop even if it is only for a phone call or a push or a sip of water. Modern cars are like computers.....grrrrrrr....in most cases they need a new chip to solve the problem. My mum's car used to go out whenever she stopped on a red traffic light. All she had to do was to take it to the next garage and they changed the computer chip for her.......and here we go....problem solved. The down side is.......what are you doing when it happens in the middle of the desert and no garage with chips is around?
I personally prefer the old cars. Mine is over 20 years old and has its moods but at least I open the bonnet and there is an old fashioned engine under neath........no chips for me.

Agreed, mine's an '88 model. I like being able to look under the bonnet and see what's what. Many of the newer cars have a cover or something over the motor so when you lift the bonnet, all you see is another lid.
