Stilnox has again come to the forefront with the recent media attention reporting on the dependence of this sleeping pill by Grant Hackett. It has also been linked to the death of Heath Ledger.

Has anyone taken Stilnox and felt the bad side effects, which has been reported?

I currently don't have trouble sleeping, as I'm so knackered at the end of the day, that as soon as my head hits the pillow, I'm out like a light. However, I'm sure there members in this forum that do have trouble sleeping, so rather than resorting to Stilnox, are there any suggestions that have worked for them, which they can recommend. The zany the better.

Meditation is something that I find very helpful. And I understand that it is not for everyone. But a more passive approach is a good set of headphones and guided relaxation audios. There are many on youtube. For example.

I was taking it 3-4 times a week for a period of about 9 months maybe 9 years ago. Same nights each week.. I was still so wired but i needed the sleep, albeit very short ones!

I noticed 2 things:

1) Within seconds of taking it i was sound asleep.

2) i sleep talk most nights and probably once or twice a week i sleep walk but i remember some mornings i'd wake up in random spots. Couch, lounge room floor etc.

One day my situation changed and i've havent touched a sleeping pill since.

I am very anti-drugs and would not touch stillnox with a ten-foot pole. I once had a hard time sleeping for reasons I never really understood and resorted to a mild over the counter antihistamine which doubled as a sleeper. After two days of trying to function through a mental fog I binned them.

Most sleeplessness resolves itself within a few days and even though it is not much fun it is not life-threatening (unless you are a tightrope walker or fighter pilot) and not worth the risks of drugs.

I think the two cases that to you mentioned, Ledger and Hackett, that the drug was abused. Any drug deliberately misused can be harmful.

you couldn't pay me enough to take stillnox... it should be banned..

I have used Stilnox regularly approximately three to four times a year (ie three or four individual occasions) for the last six years.

I have had no after-effects, get a peaceful nights sleep, and wake up not feeling like I have pillow inside my head.

At times of stress, I find it hard to sleep, and resort to warm milk drinks, hot showers, listening to soft music, etc. When all else fails, and I have been without sleep for a week or so, I dig out the Stilnox.

I am still on my original box, which is well and truly out of date, but it still seems to work well.

Like anything else, used in moderation for a specific purpose, it is great (unless you get side effects), but abused, it is dangerous.

I believe it is up to the user to be aware, rather than to ban things like Stilnox, as was suggested after the Olympics when the swimming team was abusing it.

Just my thoughts.

I have had insomnia issues for about 2 years since I've been sleeping single for the first time in about 30 years (since I was 20). The cause of mine is probably a little different to others in that it's resolved not through sex but having someone sleep next to me.

That's usually an expensive proposition so when I've been desperate for sleep, I've tried Temazepam and Diazepam (Valium). Temazepam works the best but it only has a half life of about 2 hours so is good for getting to sleep but not keeping you there. Valium has a half life of 12 hours I think but it's really for treating anxiety and for reducing alcholol withdrawal symptoms. I find it takes away my sleeping anxiety so I sleep for 8 - 10 hours and feel great! It's also a muscle relaxant and there's one muscle I have that I don't want relaxing!! So that's really out, also Benzo's are have worse withdrawal symptoms than heroin, so they are for one off applications not for regular use.

So after trying Benzo's maybe a couple of times only, I now do huge amounts of exercise, run for 2 hours, swim or surf for as long etc, gym work out. Ideally, that in combination with a girl next to me and I'm sleeping perfectly - it's the holy grail though!

I have narcolepsy. Before I was diagnosed I was prescribed stillnox because I thought I wasn't sleeping properly. The funny thing is, when I was taking it, I couldn't get to sleep. It go to the point where I was taking 2 stillnox, 2 heavy duty painkillers and about 4 glasses of port and then trying to go to sleep. That usually did the trick.

Well yeah stillknox are shit, think we agree on that. Coming off 2 benzo,s vals and sareis is worst than coming off herion, will definitely disagree ewith that and there are more than a few reasons why..

Interesting read
I am on a combination of medication for Spinal stenosis extremely painful with compression of spinal cord so crushing pain and nerve pain. I'm on Valium up to 6 per day, endone 4 hourly, 400mg of tramadol per day and then another that is an antidepressant that also works to help the nerve pain The Valium and endone only take when other medication is not easing the pain

I would never take Stilnox again I went through a very aggressive stage and was unable to sleep. Meditation best practice.
