here in oz we make a distinction . Realistically people from the sub continent are significantly different in appearance to what australians would consider asian

It's a language thing. In Australia Asian generally is used to refer to East or South East Asian countries. Even people from the middle east or the eastern half of Russia are technically Asian but would almost never be referred to as such in ordinary conversation in Australia.
