Young Greek women selling sex for the price of a sandwich, new study shows

By Daniela Deane for The Washington Post

Young Greek women are selling sex for the price of a sandwich as six years of painful austerity have pushed the European country to the financial brink, a new study showed Friday.

The study, which compiled data on more than 17,000 sex workers operating in Greece, found that Greek women now dominate the country’s prostitution industry, replacing Eastern European women, and that the sex on sale in Greece is some of the cheapest on offer in Europe.

“Some women just do it for a cheese pie, or a sandwich they need to eat because they are hungry,” Gregory Laxos, a sociology professor at the Panteion University in Athens, told the London Times newspaper. “Others [do it] to pay taxes, bills, for urgent expenses or a quick [drug] fix,” said Laxos, who conducted the three-year study.

When the economic crisis began in Greece, the going rate for sex with a prostitute was 50 euros ($53), the London newspaper quoted Laxos as saying. Now, it’s fallen to as low as two euros ($2.12) for a 30-minute session.

Laxos said the some 400 such desperate cases he found may be “nominal compared with the thousands of other sex workers operating nationwide, but they never existed as a trend until the financial crisis.” He said Greek women now account for 80 percent of the prostitution trade in Greece.

He said his wide-ranging study showed that the number of desperate young women — the ones offering the cheapest sex — appeared to be on the rise. “It doesn’t look like these numbers will fade,” he told the Times. “Rather they are growing at a steady and consistent pace.”

While I'd readily fly over there for that rate, I couldn't take advantage of a girls desperate financial circumstances. They said the going rate before the crisis was $53 per hour so I'd offer that, still really affordable for those of us at the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum. Thanks for posting.

Totally agree, Dallas. I don't think I could even get it up in those circumstances!

As you say, the pre-crisis rate (equivalent to $78) was still very good by Australian standards -- though who knows what that covers and for how long? Not my thing but is Greek included in the base price in Greece? Maybe you have to pay for a Greek salad along with the sandwich. A tossed salad, naturally.

Shame on you, johnlou, shame! You've got me making wisecracks at those poor girls' expense now. And everybody knows I am such a goody-goody.

I think Sue and I should get Stelios who owns Easy Jet to arrange a mercy flight from Athens to Perth and fly in 50 girls to work at our respective establishments.

I thought that that was cost of sandwich for us and perhaps in greece a sandwich would be much cheaper but had a look on Web and found that in greece the prices of almost everything is similar to oz. Except cigs are much cheaper over there.
Strange that prices of everything else is so high. $100 fir two at restaurant etc. Must still be monet ther as you would think that everything else should come down accordingly. Competition must be very high and many men probably satisfied with freebies from Mrs palmer and her daughters.

I am of greek background and we have been sending money home to family for years but this has actually made me quite sad and rustled my feathers :( We all work because we are hungry but to actually be selling yourself for such a brief time literally for hunger must really make a individual feel like there is no salvation.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention Ms Sue.

Stories like this always make me appreciate how incredibly fortunate we are in this country, despite all the whinging about relatively trivial matters.

Don't forget though. Even in this country there are many less fortunate and in equal footing with the less fortunate in Greece.

I was there recently. 60% unemployed from under 25yrs of age. 33% overall unemployed. Every third business has shut up with graffiti all over it .
Restaurants well you can eat a wonderful large meal for 10 Euro's $16 Australian dollars .Accommodation is cheap stayed in 4 star with breakfast for $60 . Shopping every one has 60-70% of items and the Greek people are lovely.

I suspect the girls selling themselves for the above prices are all in their youth as is very hard to get a job.

Great value and makes one want to buy a ticket to Greece, however I wonder how the crime rate is with such a dire environment.

Greece is sometimes described as "the cradle of civilisation" for good reasons. It was early Greeks who gave us democratic government. Greek philosophers and thinkers shaped social attitudes and when Rome was at its height as a world power much of their law and art was in fact copied from Greece.

It is sad that these two countries with such a proud past should now be the poor cousins of Europe.

The difference being girls in Australia don't need to do become working ladies for survival over there its all about just that, survival, So you save 50 girls and they end up working in the same profession, I think they would rather come to Australia and leave the industry all together as I bet if you talked to the 50 I bet everyone would say they hate their lives, and the clients, and the people that pimp them out, and would rather take a job in a fish n chip shop, or anywhere else bar a brothel.

You don't escape a nation to go to another one to do the same thing you go there to better your own situation, in most countries sex work is the lowest of the low, its not glamorous or glamorized like we are trying to do here in Australia, where by girls say they do it out of choice? that may be the case but soon they are no different that the working ladies in these harsh lands, addicted to money that they would not earn anywhere else, Everywhere I have been no where does it look like Pretty woman until you come to Australia, and we know why that is...

If i flew these 50 out to Australia on that flight I would be asking them their skills what they want out of life, if they had a family they would like to bring to Australia, maybe have business people on board to see if they can use these ladies skills as I bet most have more to give than just a body, and try to get these wonderful 50 ladies into something that would make them forget there past back home and embrace a brand new life in a brand new nation, you might find some of these women were business owners like mary anne is but a different business, some were lawyers, maybe Doctors, or what ever, those skills can be used, as I bet not one would say I want to be a sex worker in my new land.

Its different doing a job you choose compared to one that is chosen for you just to survive...
