Would you rather do self service or have someone give you a hand?
Please explain why...

It`s been a while since I`ve had a little vent so I think now should be ok.
How many of us after a long day of work, go to their local supermarket to grab some milk or bread. We then make our way to the checkout only to see instead of express lanes like they should have, most have self service registers.
Not only do you see a lot of people with full trolleys using them which takes up more time, surely the more self serve checkouts there are, the less staff they have to employ.

That's the whole idea, Billy. Staff are expensive, so reducing their numbers increases profits.

Ahoy I to agree with Lingham, it is all about increasing profit, I refuse to use them.

Nobody wants to pay more money for more staff - especially the consumers. Shareholders want more value for their money.

One day someone in power will have to sort out the whole wages/salaries/cost of living problem but, sadly Solomon died a long time ago.

The brutal fact is that, by international standards Australian labour is too damn expensive. That is why Holden, Ford, Mitsubishi etc are breaking camp and heading overseas and also why America's once thriving manufacturing hub of Detroit is now a ghost town.

It is too easy to just blame unions, politicians and poor management although all of these and some of the unrealistic executive salary packages are part of the picture. There needs to be some impartial determination of work value so that everyone gets a fair wage or salary which they can live on and a wage which is commensurate with the level of skill, education and risk involved in the work.

The present system whereby militant unions or those in key industries can gouge ridiculous awards while others, like the Hospital Workers Union can only get chump change s grossly unfair. Likewise, executive salaries and the packages of senior bureaucrats need reining in - no-one is worth what some of these guys take home.

It will eventually be forced on us by circumstances but, hopefully, we will muddle through.

I prefer self service...ask miss Palmer. lol...
Self service, automation is the way of the future. There may not be a need for us to go shopping anymore in the future. Things just magically appear in your fridge.

Love the self service option as i've usually only got a few items in my basket... usually quicker than waiting in the xx items or less line

Self serve is great for stocking up on the lube. Economy pack of frangas and massage oil.
I get embarrassed running that past the 15yo checkout chick

I prefer the staff option. I won't shop at Masters specifically because they only have self service checkouts.

It also gives me a chance to talk to someone. My job at the moment involves little interaction with people so an excuse to have a meaningless chat with someone who'll have forgotten the conversation by the time you've walked out the door is a nice little bonus on top of stocking up on food.
