A close friend of mine was walking home in Rivervale a couple days ago and she sadly got to experience the ugly side of Perth.
Someone thought it was ok to threaten her with a knife if she didn`t hand over her bag.
This has left her shook up but at the same time determined it won`t happen again.

Does anybody know anywhere that has cheap or even better free self defence classes for women?

Another idea is that maybe the ladies of this forum might be interested in putting in a little towards the cost of getting an instructor to do some private classes at Langtrees if MAK has the room.

I also think you should buy a personal alarm, which you can get at Coles or Bunnings. Some people opt for pepper sprays. Thing is Perth is an incredibly windy city - so many people forget to ensure the wind is BEHIND them before deploying the spray.

This is a fantastic idea. Thank you for thinking of the Langtrees ladies, billybones. Very sweet! :)

Careful with this line of thinking.

Any worthwhile martial arts training takes years to reach a stage where you can confidently take on someone armed with a knife or other weapon. I have trained in a serious dojo and 'disarmed' dozens of people attacking me with knives, machetes, fists or lumps of wood but, guess what? they weren't really trying to kill me.

THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE.

Sure, there are cowboy "martial arts" teachers who will show you some slick, clever dick "moves" but about all that will do is give you enough confidence to get yourself into a mess you can't get out of. As Granny used to say "a little knowledge is dangerous".

Far better to practice situational awareness and stay away from areas where trouble may lurk. Particularly, put that damned electronic toy away, take the speakers out of your ears and be constantly aware of what is going on around you.

The Woman's self defence course run by JanDejong's is a complete course that covers situation awareness and some rather effective defences.
This course has been running for many years and is taught by female instructors.
I would suggest you read their website and perhaps visit their Perth training facility (somewhere near King and St Georges Tce).
At the worst you will get to see a bunch of Kewl guys in uniforms.

Self defence is a great self asteem booster but one thing ive learned from my travels to a couple of the worst murder rate countries is just hand it over!! Your life is worth much much more to you than it is to these parasites.

There is a great boxing gym in Inglewood on Beaufort st, it use to be in Maryland. I use to do booking for fitness there but they might run some self defense classes, the main guy that runs the gym is really nice and im sure if your friend explains her situation he might work something out or even throw in a free class. No harm in trying..

Some other groups to try is woman's group, community services or in the good old days some YMCA centers did run free community programs. I hope that helps.

After she gets over the shock, its only natural to be angry and want to fight back. I believe building on her mental and emotional state of mind will help just as much, so its great she has you around for that support..Your a great friend

I'd recommend Krav Maga (hebrew for contact combat) as it combines the best of a lot of different styles and is probably the quickest martial art to learn the basics. It's also very popular with women for self defence purposes as the main objective of the style, isn't to spar with an attacker but to disable them in the shortest possible time - anything goes. It's why the Israeli special forces use it in their counter terrorism training. There is a couple of training centres in Perth but I've not been to them, I am thinking of taking it up again once I move to Perth soon.

As a guy, if you interacted with a woman who was proficient in this, your punting days would be limited to peep shows at best - assuming you still had your eyeballs in tact too :)

Pepper spray and run is the best defense for a female, this can bought at most army surplus or gun store. For me it would be revenge as I'm a good hunter and carry a good shovel :p
Learning any martial arts is time consuming and does not suit every situation, a swift kick to the jewels will drop most then stomp the throat, but do this very quickly no hesitation.

Almost on the money, Harry.

If you do go down the combat route you absolutely MUST get down to animal level and finish your opponent off and if that finishing leaves him in a body bag or with a permanent injury then so be it. You probably won't win if you let him come back for round two.

But forget all the crap about kicking him in the family jewels - that is not going to work against any opponent with brawling experience. Men instinctively protect that area and the testes, which are the target, are well tucked away behind the penis which can take quite a wallop with minimal harm. All you will do is piss him off.

Far better to drop a sharp foot edge kick across the knee he has his weight on - usually the left, It doesn't take much force to snap it and a strong kick anywhere within a couple of inches over or under it will do the job. Throw your car keys into his face first or raise your hands as if to strike high then let him have it.

Do that right and you can walk away - he won't follow you and he will remember you every time he walks on that leg in the future.

hearing media reports over the years and some personal observations after ive been to the casino late at night rivervale seems to be a hot spot for these type of personal attacks.i realise the police cant be there 24/7 but really how hard could it be to get rid of these lowlifes if they really wanted to.as a society we should not have to put up with this crap especially the women and the elderly.

I 100% agree with Svengali's comments - he obviously has significant experience in this area.

Self defence classes are fine, they can help you get fit, change your mind set a little bit, build some confidence. Depending on your personality and body type, having some confidence might be enough for an inexperienced thug to choose another target.

However, physical combat really should be avoided by those who honestly don't know what they are doing, self defence classes once a week for a year isn't going to make you competent enough to engage and kill your opponent.

My old trainer, many many decades ago let me in on an important 'rule' (if you like), which boiled down to essentially this: If you are not prepared to kill your opponent then why are you fighting?

What this meant was that all other avenues of escape or distraction are going to be better than combat. If combat cannot be avoided, then you have to be prepared to kill your opponent, because pulling ones punches, or fooling around is just going to get you in trouble, or maybe dead yourself.

Situational awareness is an incredibly important skill. I'd choose classes in this before I'd go for some fitness based self defence class.

I know this is an older thread but had to bump this move to the top for ladies to learn. Excellent self defense from Svengali.

Agree with this wholeheartedly. Very important to build up martial arts training from the foundations. This generally starts with footwork and a deep desire to be emersed in the culture and philosophy of your chosen art form.

"Sharp foot edge kick". Disabling move for when it's either you or them. It won't be you if you practise this kick.

Firstly we can only hope the need for any of the above is not needed
But i think we all go back to svengalis post Personal awareness and knowing what you are doing

I mean in Geraldton the police do a very short self defence course twice a year From those that have been They say there is little in the way of physical fighting (Though there is things like using car keys etc) mostly common sense training and not being afraid to scream like a banshee and run like a woman possessed at the first opportunity

And all have said They stress dont text your friends or play your music Concentrate You only have one life

not to forget this:

and of course this:

I agree, some toxic relationships and situations take foresight to overcome. However, there are situations working ladies shouldn't get themselves involved in but unfortunately might take the risk, in order to survive. Privately working ladies are often at close proximity to possible offenders, in presumably secluded areas; would it hurt for women to learn self-defense techniques that could save their own lives as well as others?

It's a messed up world out there and all - men, women, WL's should all take care not to put themselves in vulnerable positions/circumstances.

However some knowledge of self defence is a good thing, Governments/local Governments/Councils should be running free classes to all.

Having done a self defense course many years ago I fully understand pressing the throat area. Being in a DV relationship for over 20 years I learnt how to fight back often my worst mistake made things worse. As a private working lady and oftern home alone at night no man in the house. My crossbow is kept under my bed I hold appropriate hunting permit to have it in my possession. Sporting equipment always inside front door and car (my kids play sport) Car robbery seams to be increasing I always drive with doors locked and very rarely leave the house after dark. Being aware of your surroundings at all time being alert. Even when walking to my car daytime I have my keys in my hand they can be great to defend yourself or perfume/body spray spray in someones eyes so you can get away. Taking out knees much easier then going for the crown jewels. Having a plan of action in the event that something may happen is helpful.
