I`m sure we are all willing to make sacrifices for the ones we love but when is it too much??
I was talking with one of my overseas friends yesterday who was telling me that she was thinking of marrying someone simply because he would be able to provide a better life for her family.
I asked her do you love him and she replied, maybe I could learn to.
I then asked her does he know this and she replied that he does and he is willing to take the chance.

I couldn't stay with a person I didn't love and I certainly wouldn't spend the rest of my life with them. No matter what they were offering.
It seems that I'm in the minority though..... I've asked lots of girlfriends over the years if they were happy in their long term relationship or if they had found 'true love'. I would say almost 90% of them were in the relationship for convenience.
Does true love even exist any more? (Apart from Smiley and Naughty Thoughts who are so in love it's almost vomit inducing....:p)

Ahoy;- Claire;- Great response;-"I couldn't stay with a person I didn't love and I certainly wouldn't spend the rest of my life with them. Once you get over the "Teen thing", then there the "Twenty thing" most people start to realise the whole;- "Love Thing" is an impossability. I have known some people who luv, falling in love and they have gone through endless relationship`s becouse their Luv addiction.
Good luck to anyone who finds the "Love Thing" I am going to stick with the Rum thing, its a whole lot easier

Its easy for us spoilt westerners to forget that in many parts of the world, marrying someone you don't love for a 'better' life is not uncommon and often the only way out of a bad situation. Unfortunately its not a perfect world and it saddens me that some people feel they need to make choices like this.

BB comen in other parts of the world. Besides marrage to someone you dont love did you know that Philippines largest export is labour. These guys work overseas and dont go back home to see the family for 12 months at a time.

Myself I could not be away from my partner and kids for that long.

So true, Carlos. Each to their own. I wouldn't blame somebody for marrying out of economic/security reasons.
I am not a romantic but I couldn't spend my life with somebody I don't at least like. Now......"love" is a very streched/over-rated word and there are certainly different ways of loving another person. "Love" changes with age. I think the romantic love turns more into companion ship over time. And I do believe that people can learn to like/love each other. (Apparently arranged marriages are more successful than free choice ones........)
I have know people who married refugees to give them the chance to stay in Europe. And how many girls on the internet are looking for a provider?
Looks like the romantic version of marriage is not a centre piece of modern world society.

Well, if you know anyone who lives in SE Asia such as Malaysia and Singapore, you will see that some household would have a maid. Country of origin mostly Philipines and Indonesia. For measly wage, they leave their home and be a live in maid in another country. They are normally away for a few years depending on the contract they signed.

And Homer if we didn't have minimum wage conditions in Aust lots of these maids would have great opportunitys to work in Australia. Minimum wage for a overseas worker on a 457 visa is $26.05 per hour and most people just cannot afford that.

That's why this modern day slavery concept will never work in Australia.
