Phillip Hughes injured: South Australian cricketer remains in a critical condition in induced coma. First-class batsman Phillip Hughes remains in a critical condition this morning after being hit in the head by a cricket ball at the Sydney Cricket Ground yesterday. The South Australian batsman was rushed to hospital after he was struck by a Sean Abbott bouncer and collapsed during a Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales. Hughes was taken off the field and received CPR and mouth-to-mouth, before the 25-year-old was taken to St Vincent's Hospital. He had surgery to relieve pressure on his brain caused by internal bleeding. The South Australian cricketer was in an induced coma in the hospital's intensive care unit. "Phil remains in a critical condition. He will have further scans later on today and we hope to be able to provide you with some more information following the scans," Australia team doctor Peter Brukner said at a brief media gathering on Wednesday morning. The 25-year-old was wearing a helmet but footage showed the ball hit him under the back of it near the base of his skull. He bent over before collapsing to the ground and was taken off the field on a stretcher. Cricket Australia says it is offering New South Wales bowler Abbott counselling over the incident. Cricket Australia has announced the current round of Sheffield Shield matches has been abandoned entirely in the wake of Hughes's injury. "We've spoken to players and the ACA, and given how players across the country are feeling right now, it’s just not the day to be playing cricket and we understand that," CA team performance manager Pat Howard said in a statement. "We are continuing to offer all players and match officials counselling and support at this difficult time. "Phillip Hughes continues to receive the best possible medical care. The thoughts of his team-mates and the wider cricket community are with Phillip and his family and friends at this difficult time."

Ahoy I decided to start this thread, I was personally shocked, when I saw the footage of Phillip when he was injured and I wish him a speedy recovery.

So if you wish to talk about Phillip injury, please do.
If you wish to share crazy stories about crazy injuries please do.
If you wish to talk about cricket in general please do.

Ahoy;- Yes the footage is out there, it is just a shocking accident. They say he died out in the field, Hughes was taken off the field and received CPR and mouth-to-mouth, before the 25-year-old was taken to St Vincent's Hospital. There have been batsman injured in the past, but this time it is life threatening.

Such an unfortunate accident to one of Australia's best cricketers, my thoughts go out to him and his family and hope for a speedy recovery.

I'm actually really disappointed in what the media has covered in regards to the accident. Showing the footage of when the ball hits him, that's okay in my opinion - its somewhat educational. Showing the poor man, lying on the ground, his head being supported by his team mates, not so fine. The tweets about not being able to confirm that he was alive when leaving the cricket ground is also grossly inappropriate and just adds unnecessary distress to an already upsetting situation.

I hate media coverage of things like this - brings to mind the coverage over the Cup Carnival of Admire Rakti collapsing in the stalls. It personally brought me to tears every time it was shown. Maybe I'm just a softy but I don't think showing an animal or human in distress should be shown on TV for everyone to see....

And just to add on to that, my thoughts are with everyone involved in the freak accident.

Im with you on this one Claire
There are times for the media to show a bit of sensitivity
But they started showing more and more graphic reports over the years and it has snowballed

Yeah they just replayed the whole thing over and over again on 7
I thought the same, give it a rest and think about his family looking at that.

Any game played with a hard ball carries the risk of a fatal injury. I recall a female hockey player was killed a few months ago when she was hit in the head by a rising ball.

That said, I hope Phillip recovers and that the bowler gets the support he will surely need as I am sure he is feeling pretty lousy right now.

Batsmen and close in fielders have gotten into positions that they never would have been pre helmet days Going for hook shots against the likes of Brett Lee ,Allan Donald Or fielding a couple of metres from the bat

I just feel all these hits to the head and body would have happened less if players were still worried about being badly hurt

That said nobody wants to see a player hurt worse still killed or even brain damaged

He has now passed away.. Essentially making the footage thats been on replay last couple of days, is his 'final moments'. So sad..

Who saw that there's been another death in cricket?
In domestic cricket in Israel After a minutes silence for Phil Hughes International umpire was struck by a straight drive that ricocheted of the stumps and struck him in the neck killing him

I guess it will get scant attention from the media being at a far lower level and so far away

feel sad that he has passed away , but isnt the media attention abit of overkill now,i mean to say every hour on the radio all u hear is wat happened , every newspaper runs about 3 pages about what happened , its getting more coverage than if the queen died ....let him rest in peace now
