Phillip Hughes injured: South Australian cricketer remains in a critical condition in induced coma. First-class batsman Phillip Hughes remains in a critical condition this morning after being hit in the head by a cricket ball at the Sydney Cricket Ground yesterday. The South Australian batsman was rushed to hospital after he was struck by a Sean Abbott bouncer and collapsed during a Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales. Hughes was taken off the field and received CPR and mouth-to-mouth, before the 25-year-old was taken to St Vincent's Hospital. He had surgery to relieve pressure on his brain caused by internal bleeding. The South Australian cricketer was in an induced coma in the hospital's intensive care unit. "Phil remains in a critical condition. He will have further scans later on today and we hope to be able to provide you with some more information following the scans," Australia team doctor Peter Brukner said at a brief media gathering on Wednesday morning. The 25-year-old was wearing a helmet but footage showed the ball hit him under the back of it near the base of his skull. He bent over before collapsing to the ground and was taken off the field on a stretcher. Cricket Australia says it is offering New South Wales bowler Abbott counselling over the incident. Cricket Australia has announced the current round of Sheffield Shield matches has been abandoned entirely in the wake of Hughes's injury. "We've spoken to players and the ACA, and given how players across the country are feeling right now, it’s just not the day to be playing cricket and we understand that," CA team performance manager Pat Howard said in a statement. "We are continuing to offer all players and match officials counselling and support at this difficult time. "Phillip Hughes continues to receive the best possible medical care. The thoughts of his team-mates and the wider cricket community are with Phillip and his family and friends at this difficult time."
