I have a rather ridiculous question that has been bugging me for several hours. My situation is a long and complicated one and hope you have the patience to read through, but I will make it as short and sweet as possible.

I live in London. My girlfriend has been studying in Mexico for 4 months now and next week will be the first time I see her since January. She has been taking the combined pill since she was 16 to quieten her cramps during her periods (we're both 20 by the way...sorry some of this should go to the introductions forum)

When she went to Mexico she only had enough for a few months she has been waiting for a new set to arrive from home, but had no luck and has not had any in the past cycle. She also refuses to use Mexican brand pills. Now she's decided to take a set of pills from her German friend who uses the combined pill, but it's just a different company.

Now my question is this.
Is there any trouble when being on on brand of combined pill for several years and having a months break and changing to another brand?

Will we simply just be able to have sex without a condom just 7 days after starting the pill?

Any help would be appreciated and if you have any sources to direct me to that would be even better.

Branding isn't an issue. What is the issue is what the pills contain. If they are the same "type" of pill then it shouldn't be a problem to change brands. BUT, I am just a person you don't know on a forum living half a world away from you. Don't take my word for it. This is the type of advice you should be paying a doctor for.

That's the first part of the question out of the way.

The second part of the question can be answered with a question:
So how badly do you want to be a Daddy?

Sorry, not the news you wanted to hear, but a months break is a months break....

as far as i know, the pill is effective after 7 days rgardless of brand... the fact she had a month break means nothing towards the pills effectiveness as long as shes been taking it properly for 7days...
BUT she should;
a) read the info in the box
b) see a doctor
c) USE A CONDOM...

Unfortunately that is a pretty common misconception about the pill SubNymphet. It matters most where in the cycle she has started taking the pill. You really only have a 5-6 day window within the cycle to start taking the pill for it to be effective almost immediately ie after 7 full doses. Otherwise it won't be effective until the beginning of the next cycle. If the correct levels of progesterone and oestrogen are not reach in time to fool the body into believing it is pregnant, then ovulation will occur as normal. True, with the increased density and amounts of mucus on the cervix, the chances of penetration by sperm into the uterus is lessened, but not stopped.

Other factors that determine the effectiveness of the pill include the use of other drugs (antibiotics especially), vomiting, correct levels of nutrition and vitamin intake, stress etc etc.

IMHO taking the pill for any less than one full cycle before having unprotected sex is a bit like playing Russian roulette.

Agreed! Its never good to stop and start again, and just expect things to be ok. Ive always stuck by at least 14 days of the pill before any unprotected sex. Also as far as I know Mexican pharmaceuticals are fine (although Im not doctor nor pharmacist.)
