In the hustle and bustle of city life, you walk past women wearing all kinds of perfume. But then, every now and then, I pass a woman who has what can only be described as an animalistic scent. It's not the smell of sweat, perfume or other normal odor I could describe, it's a smell that causes my head to literally whip around and for me to almost bare my teeth... Is this pheromones? Are pheromones actually detectable as an odor?

I think subconsciously we can all smell natural hormones, whether they be pheromones or testosterone,,I think people tend to over do it with perfume and cologne, it should just be a slight scent and not so overpowering that you feel dizzy..In the animal world this scent is how partners are chosen, whether it be long or short term ones.

As far as I am aware, not in the traditional sense. The chemicals themselves do not have an odour, but are normally carried on other particles which do have an odour (such as sweat).

If you had bottles with different people's pheromones in them (which you are very familiar with), you may be able to determine which one comes from which person but I would doubt it. As far as I am aware, there hasn't been a double-blind study of this.

Maybe my nose is pretty sensitive, I can usually smell the hint of smoke before others in the area.

But this "scent" certainly could be smelled, it's just very hard to describe despite being 100% distinct.

Everybody has a unique smell, made up of a combination of what they themselves produce, detergents used to clean their clothes, deodorant, odours from around the house such as the food they cook and pets plus dozens of other factors. The average person couldn't tell the difference between one person and another except maybe their fragrance of choice or broad definitions, such as "that person stinks!".

If someone has a really good sense of smell then they should be able to differentiate a bit more, but not to the level of a bloodhound or other tracker.

I wonder if she was wearing a particularly rare or expensive perfume? It'd be interesting to see if you have the same reaction to someone else or if you had the same reaction if you met her again but under different circumstances. Someone just coming out of a pool would have most of their odours washed off, but would have a fairly strong smell of chlorine on them...

Good point. No, I've definitely come across this scent on a variety of women, about half a dozen, all from their teenage years to women around their fourties, I'd judge. I doubt it was an expensive perfume, as they all wore a variety of clothes, including sports outfit, etc. Not dressed up for a night on the town. They all had a bit of a glow about them, so maybe they'd recently had an orgasm... I don't know, but it vexes me. But you can't just go up to a random stranger and ask them why their smell turns you on. :)

My sense of smell is strong, I usually pick up scents that others don't,
so I think its possible to pick up on it.
I think our chemical reactions come into play in relation to noticing it.
