Infections to be aware of! Although I don't believe group strep B is typically sexuall transmitted. My doctor filled me in a little on my last visit.. Had never heard of these before! Also ladies if you are planning on conceiving, checks for these are a must as these bacterias can cause miscarriages and problems in newborns.
UREAPLASMA
Ureaplasma urealyticum is a bacterium that affects up to 70% of sexually active couples. Although it is still a sexually transmitted infection, it's not considered to be one of the standard STIs. This is because people may never experience problems because of it, but it can in some cases cause infertility and can lead to other serious infections.
A ureaplasma infection is caused by the spread of an infectious agent from an infected person to another, through saliva, blood, air, needles or sexual contact. This infection is extremely contagious and is most often spread though unprotected sexual contact, mostly occurring amongst those with multiple sexual partners. In extreme instances, you can also contract ureaplasma urealyticum by touching the secretions of an infected person’s eyes or nose.
MYCOPLASMA
A mycoplasma genitalium infection is quite similar to chlamydia and gonorrhoea, but often occurs together with other STIs, making it difficult to diagnose. It is a small parasitic infection that can affect both men and women, and is transmitted when small mycoplasma organisms are transferred through unprotected sex. These organisms cause an infection by attaching themselves to the surface of the genital tract and attacking the host's tissue.
Mycoplasma genitalium is often associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV) in women, and is a common cause of non-gonococcal urethritis in men. This infection can contracted if you are sexually active, and more so if you have sex with multiple partners. It is passed on through vaginal, anal or oral sex.
GROUP STREP B
Group B strep (GBS) is a gram-positive streptococcal bacteria also known as Streptococcus agalactiae. This type of bacteria (not to be confused with group A strep which causes "strep throat") is commonly found in the human body, and it usually does not cause any symptoms. However, in certain cases, it can be a dangerous cause of various infections that can affect nonpregnant adults, pregnant women, and their newborn infants. Group B strep infection is the most common cause of sepsis and meningitis in the United States during a newborn's first week of life.
Group B strep infection can also afflict adults with certain chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Although the incidence of neonatal group B strep infection has been decreasing, the incidence of group B strep infection in nonpregnant adults appears to be increasing.
