I whinge about the damn Olympics But when they start I am in front of the telly for a fortnight
Watch every obscure sport extra closely and become a armchair expert "Call yourself a marksman I could of hit that. Bloody useless!!"

N

Naughty Thoughts

I'm not a fan of the Olympics because to me, it has strayed from what it was meant to be about somewhat.

I prefer the sports where there is a clear winner - fastest, highest, furtherest and so on. Sports where the winner is determined by a panel of judges becomes too subjective. You could have the exact same efforts by the exact same competitors and have vastly different winners depending on who was on the judging panel.

I really don't get his obsession with sport in general so, for me, the next couple of weeks will just be an annoyance and I will probably just turn the T.V. to face the wall or watch d.V.D.s

If someone gets off of running/jumping/swimming better than someone else and wants to spend his/her life getting better at it, fine, it is their choice but I can't be bothered watching them do it.

If you cant be prepared and at your peak for the event that is the pinnacle of your sport Then you must have been doing something very wrong in your preparation
You dont go to LT's hoping for a podium finish but say your not up for it so will settle for just turning up

I think Stephanie Rice is being pumped up by the media and she is over rated. There many other girls on the swim team that don't get a mention.

New Zealander used brothel to fund Olympic dream
Story by;- Les Carpenter
Full story
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/olympi...othel-to-fund-olympic-taekwondo-training.html

LONDON – The path to the Olympics is not cheap, something a New Zealander named Logan Campbell discovered upon returning home from his taekwondo loss four years ago in Beijing. He faced a mountain of bills from travel, equipment, and training, almost $120,000 worth in American currency, and he couldn't keep asking his parents to pay it.
London was going to cost him another $200,000. He needed money. He needed it fast.
So he opened a brothel.
Not surprisingly, the brothel, and the publicity it stirred in Auckland when he announced his intentions in 2009, did not impress his country's sports federation. The people in charge of protecting the nation's sporting image did not see an athlete talking openly about the selling of flesh to fund his trip to the next Olympics as a reflection of their values. The fact brothels are legal in New Zealand, as long as a list of guidelines is met, didn't much impress the country's sports ministers.
The New Zealand Olympic Committee sent him a letter telling him to stop linking prostitution to funding an Olympics journey or they would sue.
But something remarkable happened. Money came for taekwondo. More money than the country's taekwondo team had ever received. No longer desperate for funds, Campbell sold the brothel in 2011. This spring, New Zealand put him on its London team.
Maybe because of this new peace, Campbell did not seem happy to be asked about his former business as he sat in the lobby of the East London school where he was training on Wednesday.
"I sold the brothel so I don't really want to talk about it now, OK," he said.
Yet as he said this, there also seemed a perception he wanted to eliminate. He senses that people think he was a sleazy pimp selling women on the street corner. This, he said, was not true.
"It's a legal business in New Zealand," Campbell said. "It's completely different from other countries in the world. There was no – I don't know – no one was forced into the industry, and they're not doing it because they are in poverty because we have a really good welfare system."
He stopped for a moment.
"It's more of like a higher-class thing than you see around the world. I think a lot of people don't understand that. As compared … to places like Thailand [where] I know what it's like in the poorer countries, where people don't have a choice to get into that sort of industry. But in New Zealand it's completely different, so it's fine."

Campbell said his parents didn't object to his running a brothel. Back in 2009, he told several New Zealand news outlets that his mother's worries were calmed after meeting several of the women who worked for her son.
"I've never had anyone in New Zealand be like, 'Why did you do that? That's not right,' or anything like that," he said.
Still, a brothel is a brothel. And this one, according to news reports at the time, had 14 rooms. Campbell was quoted as calling it "an escort agency." A website bearing his name was filled with pictures of Campbell in his taekwondo gear welcoming visitors to donate to his Olympics quest. "Or if you are in Auckland," he said on the site, "show your support by visiting the high-class escort agency I have just opened up."
The site promised "the finest range of intelligent ladies, the most luxurious facilities on the market" and told prospective clients to "fulfill your fantasy, bi-doubles, Greek, fantasy, dress, and much much more." First-time visitors became VIP members, a privilege that earned them "a number of free extras."

Very true....but there are some sports in the Olympics I do love watching like the Gymnastics. I am always amazed how flexible, controlled and the strong the human body can be. Beautiful to watch.

And I am "amazed" that some teams (I think it was the Korean and the Chinese Badminton team) compete to not to win.........what the hell.........they just should have stayed at home.

Inquiry into Aussie condoms at athletes’ village
By Cameron Roberts
Aussie BMX cyclist Caroline Buchanan tweeted a photo from the athletes' village of a container of condoms with sign below.
It was an innocent tweet but it has since become surrounded in controversy because the condoms were made by Ansell, not the official supplier Durex.
Olympics organisers provided 150,000 Durex condoms to the 10,800 athletes.
An official spokesperson told local media an investigation is ongoing to determine who distributed the Kangaroo condoms.
"We will look into this and ask that they are not handed out to other athletes because Durex are our supplier," she said.
Organisers strongly control which brands are promoted within the Olympics precinct because of a number of sponsorship deals with companies like McDonald’s, Coca Cola and Heineken.
The trend of supplying athletes with condoms began in Barcelona during the 1992 Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee endorsed the move to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention.

Ahoy;- now if we do some quick maths;- 150,000 Durex condoms to the 10,800 athletes.that approximately 14 condoms per athlete and hence 14 potenial screws over the olympic games;- Hmmmmmmm

Different issue but apparently related to the so called lack of Gold medals for Australia in this years Olympics......listening to the news this morning I realised for the first time that PE is not compulsory in Australian schools. Wow....how can that be? It definitely was one main "subject" when I went to school and I totally believe it should be a substantial part of the education.
I couldn't help but grin at the guys comment: instead of competitive sports schools offer now voluntary participation........oh no....please bring back PE and then in the long run there might be the chance of more gold medals. :walk::walk:

Free to air coverage has been hugely disappointing in my opinion, only to be overshadowed by the under achievement by our Olympic athletes....

Bring on Rio!!!

I wouldn't call winning a silver/bronze medal an underachievement.
However all over now for the next 4 years. Let's wait and see what happens in Rio.

Your right Rochelle, silver or bronze isnt a bad result but if your not performing at your very best and setting PBs then imho its a failure.

The sailers did very well, no one would question jess fox on her silver but imho the swimmers and the likes of steve hooker are the ones who really let australia and, more importantly, themselves down.
