Nightshift how to sleep

L

Locoman

Today I finished at 6am and have to start again at 6pm. It has been hard to sleep today just short bursts of good sleep then wide eyed in between.
I have done all my usual things but this day nothing is working.
I am wondering how you people out there manage your sleep if you work nightshift ?

You should talk to our Amanda, she was chewing the sheets for 2 days after Ms Sue kept her up all night LOL

I keep the room dark and cool and make sure I have eaten and not drank too much so I wont need to get up to go to the loo and turn phone on to silent and hope for the best
If I wake once I will stay in bed to see if I fall asleep again if I wake again its time to get up and just have a lazy day

If you half wake up in-between DON'T check the time. Just ignore any time device turn around and try to go back to sleep. I find it very hard to go back to sleep after I checked the time even if it is only 2 hours after I went to bed. It is like my body pushes the "start" button as soon as time is involved.
I guess it has to do with genetics as well. Some people can sleep any time any where, some people can't.

PS: a sleeping pill occasionally won't hurt you and might give you the rest your body needs.

Thanks guys the trouble with the job I do is that we never start at the same time as we progress. We can start at any time in the 24 hours of course the there is some structure but fairly loose.
Then at the end of our working 7 or 8 days we get fatigued out because we are going on days off.
Getting to old for this shit.

Thanks Rochelle sometimes I do take a sleeping pill but the old mind today was running.

Definately put your phone on silent. People who don't know or understand the hours you work tend to have an annoying habit of calling at the crack of noon. Inconsiderate bastards.:mad::mad: (My pet hate in case you're wondering)

Phone on silent!!! Dark room. Try getting into a pattern... If yo finish 6 am try heading off to bed around 7 / 8 am every day. Including days off. Just few days and your body clock's managed ;)

That way my sleep pattern doesn't change ....
However by the time i get to bed i just pass out ...lol.....................
and if all else fails I use restavit but be very careful with it please talk to your doctor before taking any medication ..

Yeah thanks for the advice but like I said earlier my shifts this week
1730 - 0400
2000 - 0400
2200 - 0600
1800 - 0200
We never get an opportunity to fall into a pattern at least on days off now.
It interests me how other people handle nightshift.
As far as drugs go we are checked at random times so have to be careful so I generally don't take anything that can catch me out.
Thanks you guys been very interesting, I admire people who work when normal people have the pleasure of a good nights sleep.
I do what I do because of the advantages good money, time off at unusual times and people who work night shift generally are an unusual interesting characters.

Ha ha ha, you're lucky hon. Between my uni schedule for the next 16 weeks, the shifts I want to work and the shifts we are now required to work, your's look like a walk in the park! :p:p:p

It makes a difference as well if I am in bed before 5am or after 5am. Somehow sleep is a lot better before 5am.
LOL there have been times I could survive on 4 hours sleep but those times are definitely over...........love my sleep now
