Sattler suspendend over gay questions
Perth radio host Howard Sattler has been suspended after asking Julia Gillard whether her partner was gay.

6PR drive presenter Howard Sattler has been sacked amid the fallout from his controversial interview with Prime Minister Julia Gillard in which he repeatedly asked if her partner Tim Mathieson was gay.

The announcement was made on-air by the station this afternoon.

6PR general manager Martin Boylen read the statement that was also sent to all staff.

He said Sattler’s conduct was disrespectful to the office and to the Prime Minister, and was entirely inappropriate.

Mr Boylen also apologised to Ms Gillard and Mr Mathieson for allowing Sattler to raise the matters that he did.

“The station has now decided to terminate Mr Sattler’s engagement effective immediately,” he said.

Sattler said he was taking legal action against Fairfax, saying he had six months left of a two year contract.

He said he was sorry he offended the Prime Minister but had no regrets.

The station suspended Sattler yesterday as outrage over the interview grew, gaining widespread condemnation.

Sattler, who is well known for his blunt style, quizzed Julia Gillard on his afternoon show yesterday about offensive references to her body on a Liberal Party fundraiser's menu, her religious beliefs and same-sex marriage.

He then asked if he could put rumours to her about her partner Tim Mathieson's sexual orientation.

Ms Gillard said the rumours were "absurd".

"But you hear it, he must be gay. He's a hairdresser," Sattler said.

Ms Gillard replied: "To all the hairdressers out there, including the men who are listening, I don't think in life one can actually look at a whole profession full of different human beings and say, 'Gee, we know something about every one of those human beings'. I mean it's absurd, isn't it?"

Sattler: "You can confirm that he's not?"

Gillard: "Oh, Howard, don't be ridiculous. Of course not."

The radio jock copped heavy criticism on Twitter with journalists and commentators asking if the questioning revealed double standards and went too far.

"Remember the day that radio interviewer asked John Howard if Janette was a lesbian?" @GregBaum tweeted.

Sattler later apologised to those who thought he went too far.

"The management of this station ... has instructed me to apologise to anyone who was offended by my interview with the Prime Minister, during which I asked questions about her private life," he said.

He said he asked Ms Gillard those questions because her office had agreed to a "candid" interview.

Fairfax Radio posted a statement on their website last night confirming Sattler had been suspended pending an internal inquiry.

"Fairfax Radio management has reviewed this interview and considers the questions posed by Mr Sattler were disrespectful and irrelevant to the political debate," it said.

"The PM answered Mr Sattler's questions with dignity and some patience."

A statement on the station's website this afternoon reiterated Mr Boylen's response: "During an interview on the Drive program yesterday, presenter Howard Sattler pursued a line of questioning with Prime Minister Julia Gillard that was disrespectful to the office and the person of the Prime Minister and was entirely inappropriate.

"Radio 6PR apologises unreservedly to Ms Gillard and Mr Mathieson for allowing these matters to be raised on the Drive Program.

"In the wake of yesterday's interview Radio 6PR suspended Mr Sattler from broadcasting pending a review of the matter today.

"The station has now decided to terminate Mr Sattler's engagement."

WHO will speak up for the poor and downtrodden masses now? My god, what a terrible tragedy has befallen us.

Sattler had been taken off air indefinitely after questioning Ms Gillard on Thursday. Earlier on Friday, Mr Boylen said reaction to the interview on the station's website had been “pretty much one way” in condemning it as disrespectful and irrelevant.

6PR is owned by Fairfax Media, publisher of this website.

Sattler, who later apologised on air for the interview, has found few supporters among his fellow broadcasters.

Former 3AW broadcaster and Seven Network commentator Derryn Hinch branded the Fairfax Radio employee a “coward”.

"This is just low-life stuff and Howard is being a coward on this," he said. "This was low life and it diminished the office of prime minister."

"I thought the prime minister showed a lot of class, a lot of style," Hinch added.

"She should have leaned across the desk and slapped his face."

Sydney radio talkback host Ray Hadley said he would never ask about anyone's sexuality.

“Of all the things ... I could ask her, that would be the last thing I would choose to ask the prime minister," Hadley told ABC radio. "The sexuality of anyone, be it her partner or anyone else is no one's business."

Melbourne broadcaster Neil Mitchell said Sattler was a “nice, gentle man” before going on to condemn the interview, which he described as “stupidity on a stick”.

“Now, we all make mistakes, but this was a beauty,” the 3AW presenter said.

It has been suggested that Sattler's contentious line of questioning was prompted by sliding listener figures.

Last month his ratings were down 1.1 points to just 8.4 per cent of the audience in his timeslot.

Sattler has also had some widely publicised health problems, reportedly suffering a stroke last year. Recently, the 67-year-old has spoken about his treatment for Parkinson's Disease.

No stranger to controversy over the years, New South Wales-born Sattler was caught up in the cash-for-comment furore in 2000 when the Australian Broadcasting Authority examined deals he had with Optus, Qantas and Mitsubishi.

He is also known for being unpredictable in his positions, most recently castigating parents who refused to vaccinate their children.

"Predictable is boring,” he said in an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald in 2000. “I'll roll with the flow. I'm prepared to chuck the whole three hours [of scheduled material] if something better comes along. There won't be any situation where I'm locked in - I'll throw premiers out of studios, prime ministers off the air, if something better comes along."

Perhaps, his most infamous on-air moment - until yesterday - came when he made the comment “good riddance to bad rubbish” in response to hearing about the deaths of three indigenous car thieves.

He has since repeatedly made the point that he did not know that the dead were aboriginal and therefore the comment was not racist.

In my humble opinion he should have been fired as soon as the P.M. left the building.

His questions were crass, vulgar, overly personal and downright insulting to both Ms Gillard and her partner, not to mention disrespectful of the office of Prime Minister - our elected head of state.

He didn't just cross the line of good taste, he trampled a half mile past it.

You know I dislike American politics But at least there seems to be respect for the office of the President Whether they like or dislike the person They still respect the office

I do feel it is one of the few if only traits from US politics I would like to see in this country

Howard Sattler should never have been hired 28 years ago by 6PR. He was washed up and out of date then, and it was a surprise that he was hired then. (But 6PR was in the doldrums even then).

Methinks they publicised this stuff-up so that more than their usual 6 listeners heard about them.

I would have liked to hear his last interview; They say do the crime to the time so he only has himself to blame.

He was patronizing (his comment about being the "butt" of jokes - given Germaine Greer's recent criticism) , he picked the wrong target. He started back pedalling 'cos he found for possibly the first or very rare times someoone put him in his place. Some people go out with a bang, others go out with a whimper.

Well I'm no fan of Julia Gillard as I think her government has done significant damage to the country. However, credit where credits due she conducted herself exceptionally well under what was the most inappropriate interview one could imagine.

My fave was todays paper With Sattler trying to blame everyone bar himself for the position he has ended up in
Sounds as if Gillard had asked him to stop he would That method of defense against shock jocks only turns them nastier as they think they smell blood

If he sticks around and has some WA sons we can have some more like him in a few years.

I couldn't agree more. Howard has over stepped many a line during the years, enough is enough. And with the Dinner menu still fresh in peoples minds as well, I believe this harms the opposition in a big way. No need for nastiness, Politics is bad enough already as it is.

Normally I'd defend someone right to be a bit of a fucking idiot. Not on this occasions. Fuck that guy.
I read he had 6 months left on his contract. So it's really not that big of a deal.
