Police are investigating a video of a traffic officer swearing at man who appears to have received a fine for not wearing a helmet. The video, which has been posted to Facebook by "John Gds Martin", has attracted nearly 21,000 likes since it was uploaded yesterday.
The video shows the police officer giving a person a traffic infringement.
It is unclear if the person who uploaded the video to Facebook is the person who received the infringement. The disgruntled man suggests the fine is a “joke” before asking “what crimes” the officer stopped. The officer, clearly not impressed with the man’s attitude, walks away only to be told by the man to “catch you later, go stop some f***ing criminals”.
The officer turns on the man, walking up close to him and saying: “If you swear one more f***ing time I will put you in the lock up for disorderly, just like last time, I will deny your bail, and some big fella is going to play with your a....... during the night. If that’s what you want, say one more f***ing swear word”.
Inspector Dominic Wood said today that officers dealt with thousands of interactions each day, often under trying circumstances and it is a reality that officers would be recorded by people in the community.
“Clearly, on this occasion, the officer hasn’t handled the situation as well as he should have and he has already acknowledged that his actions were inappropriate,” Insp. Wood said.
“We don’t have the entirety of the video, so we don’t know the full circumstances but we will be investigating the matter and speaking further with the officer concerned,” he said.
It received over 5600 shares and had a further 6000 people comment.
Comments have been split between people supporting the man who filmed the video, accusing police of exercising a double standard and those applauding the police officer’s stance against the “goose”.
WA Police Union President George Tilbury said officers interact with the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week and on some of these occasions the situation can be quite frustrating and stressful.
"As the full video has not been uploaded and the entirety of the circumstances are unknown, it is very difficult to comment on the actions of the officer," Mr Tilbury said.
"However, police officers should always do their utmost to portray a professional image, which can be difficult given that they are under more scrutiny than any other profession.
"Our members need to be aware that in this modern age of technology their actions and interactions with the public will be filmed, often without their knowledge or permission.”
Police Minister Liza Harvey indicated to reporters that using foul language was inappropriate but she would leave the matter to police to investigate internally.
