Earlier this week Twitter blew up while Lateline broadcast a view of sexwork (or prostitution) in Australia.

I would just like to point out - Scarlet Alliance did a great job, to go into an interview and be bombarded by a speaker with so many negative questions. The speaker on Lateline should be a neutral person, who asks both negative and positive questions. But sadly - Scarlet Alliance was not met with this and I applaud the speaker from Scarlet Alliance for her patience and answers!

For once I would love for a show to broadcast the positive aspects of Sexwork (and the not stereotypical sex workers the media and movies wrongly portray with no research), and the girls who love and enjoy their job, I love my job. Yes the money is good, and yes that is why I got into the job in the first place - But what I found was one of the most rewarding careers that I am very passionate about. I am 25, with a few (paid off) properties, beautiful clients who are more like friends, 2 degrees, a healthy superanuation fund, and I am very happy.

Sexwork provides me with choice, freedom and financial stability.

Also - I pay a SHITLOAD of tax, so if the government wants to take away my job, and start punishing both the sex workers and my clients they can also kiss goodbye my $30,000+ of tax I pay each year! Then who will support the dole bludgers???

GRRRRR!!!!!!

Yes politicians put up with this, but they also have the funding and connections to get themselves out of the stigma or the issue. The way the speaker was not even willing to listen to the positives of the industry - No wonder there is so much stigma attached to sex work.

Host was really quite condescending in her tone and attitude.
If any of this was truly important to the people in power then they would also highlight the fact that violence, psychological problems and drub abuse are more prevalent in young male 'twinks', transvestite and transsexual sex workers.
But they don't, because they don't really care, they just want a headline and 'defending' women is good, whereas talking about young gays (particularly the homeless ones) and trans people's makes tv producers uncomfortable and politicians nervous.
This is the same old crap that just keeps on getting regurgitated every few years when some f#@knut wants a headline. Nothing will ever really change, nothing ever really does...

My respect to you zMs Rider...i may have missed the point in the article...i thought it was highlighting the very sad issues of violence..drug abuse and the horror of what these women are subjected to and the work of social groups trying to help. The perpetrators who vomit these crimes to vulnerable and unprotected sex workers are the "scum" ...I see your point there are many many positive aspects to the sex industry ...and that is another show completely...unfortunatel there are too many that judge.

Well said miss Bee. Yeah one of the many reasons for all the negativity and judgments are the people who run the industry. Human trafficking, young girls and women forced into this line of work. These victims are coerced into unprotected sex. It is people like these that caused all the kaboodle.

Happens all the time unfortunately. In fact I'd challenge anyone to find a positive article/interview etc on the sex industry in Australia.:(:(:(

Definately no positives in that report. This reporter maybe needs to do a separate interview with the positives of this industry.

Have to agree with others stereotyped and rhetoric programs like this are a disgrace to programs like this, primarily aimed at pushing a religious propaganda agenda under the guise of reporting. Its quite ironic that the story itself is really using such issues as a cheap headline grab.

I didn't actually watch the all the shows, only the first, but read the transcripts of the other two which I think were much better in a way, the Canadian and alliance person tried hard to provide valued comment and suggestions. Heaven forbid if Australia brought in the Canadian and Swedish model as this would be the most archaic approach to this issue, why in the hell have we come to conclusion of making criminals out of people that are doing something between consenting adults, rather than targeting those that actually are violent, abusive and criminal, in nature. When is society going to wake up and deal, with this industry as real adults so that all those involved are safe and respected.

Yeah this got me going on this topic, damn.

Stigmatizing the oldest profession doesn't make sense. It has existed for so long because there has always been a market. If you wanted to get rid of the sex industry you would need to address the root cause (pun not intended). I think the porn industry is worse for stigmatizing people, those images don't go away leaving it behind would be very difficult.

As with many issues it s best to ask those involved and not to presume that you from on high have the answer.

Hi Zoe, people are always negative and afraid of things that they don't understand, or are unwilling to listen to others view, due to what people will think of them if they are perceived to support this industry. Politicians are negative of this industry because they perceive that it will get them votes if they don't support it, how I bet a few have been to some brothels over the years :D

I had the same problems with friends and family of mine when I said to them that I was moving to Canberra to work in a Bordello. The more society evolves the less prudes we will have in it.

I totally agree with everything you've said! If I was a woman I'd be doing just what you're doing! Why the hell do they want you to live like the rest of us? - working yourself to death in a miserable job for just enough to survive on with no hope of a future is beyond me and having to listen to Joe Hockey tell us how great it will be to work at Bunnings until we're 80!!. Good for you for having assets and setting yourself up not to mention regular intimacy which is a benefit that some of us can only see as a dream when we go to work in our offices surrounded by hugely overweight colleagues with no sex drive and a donut addiction. Society has evolved to applaud wealth and success and make those that don't feel inferior and suffer greatly. Sure your job has it's downsides but geez, follow me around for a month and you'll run back to Langtrees! By the way, I follow Scarlet Alliance on Twitter and they seem to be really supportive of the industry. You're right too, those video's were awful and showing the bottom end of the industry. I wish someone would do a good interview for once.
