Elanor (Nelly) Cameron started her career in prostitution in 1926 in Sydney's Surry Hills and Woolloomooloo districts at the age of fifteen!! she was a brown-eyed blonde. Over time, Nelly became Sydney's most popular and most expensive prostitute and was known as Sydney's Underworld Beauty Queen and also as the "Kiss Of Death Girl" or "The Angel Of Death", as most of her boyfriends or husbands were subsequently murdered. During her years in crime, Cameron was kidnapped, beaten, stabbed, razor slashed, and shot on numerous occasions.
I find Nelly iconic as life would have been so different in those times, no phones, no forum, no Langtrees, minimal respect for women, violence a regular occurrence. I imagine at 15, it would not have been an easy experience, but she pushed through with class and survived.. Even though this amazing human had passed away years before i was born i feel very connected with her.
Biggest question on my mind? What drove an over privileged middle class teenager from a good catholic home to such a world??
