Is Microwaved Food Safe and Healthy ?

Humans are the only animals on the planet who destroy the nutritional value of their food before eating it.

Using a microwave to heat baby milk was banned in the USA, it sent a clear message : this device is potentially dangerous. It was quickly explained that the ban was intended to avoid the risk of toddlers being burned, because the heated fluid has a much higher temperature than the container that it is in, and the carer’s carefulness often leaves much to be desired. But the fear of microwaves nevertheless remained. Microwaves had been banned from use in the USSR (1976, which was repealed only after the change of regime) due to the risk of cancer. Perhaps they are harmful but we do not know for sure as there are no official scientific studies to confirm their harmfulness. Most people use microwaves with no apparent ill health effects but there are others who believe that microwave radiation might be harmful.

9. Microwaving altered the breakdown of elemental substances when raw, cooked, or frozen vegetables were exposed for even a very
short time and free radicals were formed.
10. Microwave exposure caused significant decreases in the nutritional value of all foods studied, particularly:

* A decrease in the bioavailability of B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, essential minerals and lipotrophics
* Destruction of the nutritional value of nucleoproteins in meats
* Lowering of the metabolic activity of alkaloids, glucosides, galactosides and nitrilosides (all basic plant substances in fruits and
vegetables)

* Marked acceleration of structural disintegration in all foods.
11. Microwave emissions also caused alteration in the catabolic (breakdown) behaviour of glucoside – and galactoside – elements within
frozen fruits when thawed in this way.

apparently Japan is not banning microwave ovens. This rumor originated on a Russian satire website, was then picked up by several Spanish-language news outlets, and then went viral on Feacesbook.
While many outlets mistook this story for a genuine piece of news, Panorama.pub is a satire publication. A disclaimer at the bottom of the article states that “All texts on this web site are grotesque parodies of reality and are not real news

looks like you just copied and pasted some stuff swirling around feacesbook or other similar sites.
cooking on a stove top can vastly reduce the the vitamins in vegies if you boil it.
my mother used to put vegies in a pressure cooker, might as well have thrown the vegies away and drunk the water in the bottom.
baby bottles (or any drink) is dangerous to heat up in a microwave probably as it creates hot spots that can burn, even though the bottle feels just warm.

Best not to climb into the microwave and zap yourself then.
(Blood used for transfusions should not be put in the microwave. But it shouldn't be baked in the oven either.)

I appreciate that the post was well-intentioned, but I think we probably have enough panic around at the moment without this kind of silliness adding to it.

Yesterday we had lunch with a doctor that I have met in India. We were discussing food and how important it is to eat the right sort of food and that is how microwaves came up. I asked caroline to start this thread as I am keen to learn more as always been suspicious of microwaves and keen to discover the true facts, so we weren't scare mongering just trying to get the real facts and appreciate all the feedback.

Those Web sites are nonsense, the same sort of nonsense that gets peddled with mobile phones, Wi fi, overhead electricity wires and so on. Microwave ovens put out non ionising radiation like wi fi, phones, etc and in over 70 years there has not been one validated case anywhere in the world where someone has got seriously ill, let alone died from it. Microwave cooking is usually more nutritious than other forms of cooking, particularly with vegetables. This is the science behind it, google Dr Karl and microwave for example.

The plastic breaks down and goes into your food. Yes it says microwave safe but it still breaks down, just holds better than other plastic.

an old geezer I once knew said in the early days of radar they used to sit in front of it to stay warm, and they put their lunch there for a while until it was warm
So like many things on this forum YMMV, his certainly did, lived to over 100
