I intend to do a number of post in a general heading is it natural.

The first of these is monogamy:

Do we do our selves a disservice by being monogamous. I think this is an interesting question in particular if we look to nature to see if we are strange animals in being so. Well surprisingly the answer is that there are in fact other monogamous animals. Gibbons are a good example of this.

There are how ever far more animals that are not. Females (animals in particular mammals) when in season will mate as often as possible.

Primates (Humans Great Apes and the lesser apes) also engage in recreational sex. The recreational sex animal are not monogamous and in fact they are as randy as hell…

Is it simply a Judea Christian thing that pushes this aspect.

I firmly believe there is a separation between sex and love so they can be separated. I would be interested in seeing your thoughts.

Just as a post script you really should read about the sex lives on Bonobo Monkeys…

My two cents lol

Here are a couple of interesting facts for you to consider.

1. True "monogamy", formerly thought to be common in nature, is actually found in less than 5% of mammals.

2. While humans tend to be genetically "hard-wired" to pair-bond, both genders are equally just as "hard-wired" to be sexually non-exclusive, though for different reasons.

3.Of the 1,170 human societies cataloged in Murdock's Ethnographic Atlas, over 72% permit multi-spouse relationships.

4.it was common for Catholic priests to have multiple wives and mistresses. In 726AD, it was acceptable for a man with a sick wife to take a second wife so long as he looked after the first one. With concerns for protecting Church property from inheritance however, offspring could not inherit church property and it was later declared that all sons of priests were illegitimate. In 1022, Pope Benedict VIII banned marriages for priests (monogamous or polygamous). Finally in 1139, Pope Innocent II voided all marriages of priests and all new priests had to divorce their wives. All these were done to possess and protect money and church property. Making polygamy a sin and marriage unacceptable for a priest was a slow and purposeful process.

hope this helps to inform a little :D

You would Have Thought So

I would like to think albeit we are mammals that we are quite a few wrungs above dogs cats and monkey's and apes.......

Evolutionary assention to the top of the food chain does not mean it is right. As ford rightly pointed out the discussion I was endeavouring to raise was Is Monogomy natural or cultural/Sosio.

My thought is that it is an unnatural state ! The Bonobos now whats what I tell you.

Monogomy

My input for what it is worth....emotion....most other mamals do not "think" like we do,they mate for procreation not pleasure, that I believe is what separates us from apes, monkeys etc. Most of us don't mate because we want children ,thank God could you imagine only coming into season once a year...no wonder all the females go bonking as many males as possible gotta get them all in before she goes off the boil.LOL I agree with BigMike I think for some it is possible to separate pure animal sex from loving sexual sex,I personally believe that you can have both of these with 1 person. That's just my opinion...thank God we are all different and can debate this stuff on our site. Well done for the thread,it really made me think (Scarlett)

Actually my dear (sorry cant help the obviuos line )almost all the higher primates have sex for pleasure and masturbate as well. The Bonobos have sex in some form every 90 minutes....
