So I was home with the brother and his family from Christmas and my eldest niece (11) is running around in full blown make up and what I would say revealing clothing. Then they show me the primary school graduation photos and it makes my blood boil.

Is it just me or are kids being made to look older and skimpier. I got mildly pissed off at my brother but the only answer I got was "it's what all the kids wear now..."

It's not just you. You'll probably find rants against it on http://melindatankardreist.com

This is the only issue -- sexualisation of children by the fashion industry -- I agree with this woman on, otherwise her wowser anti-porn, anti-prostitution, anti-prettymucheverything views make my blood boil.

Got to agree with Pandar.B.Ear and XLNC.

Jeez - let kids be kids.

Look what happened to JonBenet Ramsey 16 years ago.

For what possible reason would one want a young child to be "sexy and revealing"?.....unless you are one of those depraved fucks that prey on young kids - see http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-27885502

Don't even get me started on this. :rage::rage::rage:

I'm more pissed at the primary school graduation... what a crock of crap.
graduation is just that.... when you successfully complete school.
took me 13 years to do that.
These lame arsed kids are just being taught simply showing up deserves celebration

It is all part of the new EYLF and it is designed to be a positive environment where no one getd to be left out or made to feel neglected. Personally, I preferred the old way

Nope, It's not just you mate. Some of the stuff we used to sell at the shop as "sexy clothing" turns up in Supré or any of the other "tween fashion" shops. Really makes me sick.

When dressing little girls up like this becomes culturally acceptable you know there is something very very wrong with the world! It's a sad indictment on our society that it rewards this kind of over sexualizing of kids who should be more properly outside playing in the mud.

Thought provoking thread - agree with all the above

Is this how/what our society wants the world to accept as the face of western cultural and as normal accepted standards?

You can see how easily these can be portrayed as the child soldiers of the capitalist infidels?

Food for the religeous fundmentalist grist?

All while we stand on our moral high ground on their child soldiers and what they consider normal? Definitely makes you think twice.

As someone who is 10yrs her sisters senior... I have seen this go on for a while. there is an age gap there but not old enough that I would chalk up my disapproval to being an old fuddy duddy...

My sister's perception of appropriate clothing and presentation is horrendeous. And even though she's slowly changing from this...(mostly because she's become self concious of her weight gain) as a young teen her level of understanding of appropraite was pretty non exsistent. Even up until a few months ago, she still does and says things for the shock factor...

I definitely see that the lack of limits, boundaries, and active parenting resulted in this kind of thing being allowed to florish...Teaching young girls and not pushing or encouraging or enabling by setting them up with sexed up clothing etc...

However...

It's a bigger issue than just young girls being turned into objects by the media/fashion industry.

"She Asked For It": The Destructive Impact of Rape Mythology

I really believe that this is as true for adult women as well as teenage girls and young girls... Victim blaming is horrific in todays society... and regardless of setting young girls up with the right tools to be self confident and have self worth and self respect... females of any age should not be reduced to sexualisation at any stage of their lives regardless of what they are wearing.

Touchy topic maybe...

I have a daughter... as becuase of things that happened in my past I am very protective over her... I'm protective over her self development and I'm protective over not letting her be sexualisation by others. I shouldn't have to be constantly worried or looking over my shoulder at the beach, in the shops or at the park... But I do... becuase my knowledge of the world is that I have to.. otherwise I might leave her at risk.

The sad this about being so conscious of this victim blaming society that we have become is that I also have to make sure that I don't lean to much toward sexual shaming either...

But to sit here and rant on like this, I should probably mention that it is as equally important about what we teach young males and boys about how to view, respect and enjoy past that objectification that they get taught...

In a perfect world... It wouldn't matter what your friends daughter was wearing...

I wonder if Laci Green would think Lana was objectifying women with her 10,000+ posts?

Well, Laci can rest easy I for one will definitely not be objectifying her or raping her no matter what she wears or doesn't wear.
