Sugary drinks pile on the kilos
Cathy O'Leary Medical Editor, The West Australian
July 19, 2013, 6:12 am

West Australians are drinking themselves fat, with some putting on more than 6kg and spending $1000 each year by having just one sugary drink a day, according to health experts.

It is not just soft drinks in the firing line, with evidence that a daily serve of fruit juice, energy drink or sports drink can add up to 23kg of sugar over a year.

The next phase of the LiveLighter anti-obesity campaign being launched today warns that while fatty food is mostly blamed for the two-thirds of West Australians who are overweight or obese, hidden sugar in drinks is now a big culprit.

It highlights that a 375ml can of soft drink contains 10 teaspoons of sugar and having one a day can lead to a 6.5kg weight gain over a year, at a cost of more than $1000.

Upsizing to a 600ml bottle of soft drink adds 16 teaspoons of sugar to the waistline each time.

Experts from the WA Health Department, Heart Foundation and Cancer Council say Australia is ranked in the top 10 countries for consumption of sugary drinks but many people are unaware of the excessive kilojoules they drink.

Melbourne University global health expert Rob Moodie said diets and exercise patterns had changed significantly in a relatively short time.

"We are eating and drinking ourselves fat at the same time as not exercising to compensate," he said. "Sugary drinks are empty kilojoules in that they don't provide us with nutrition, just extra kilojoules."

Professor Moodie said sugar-laden drinks were heavily marketed and he accused the food industry of using similar tactics to promote unhealthy foods as the tobacco industry had long used for cigarettes.

Although it was important people took responsibility for what they put in their mouth, governments needed to address issues of advertising and price.

LiveLighter campaign director Maria Szybiak said print, radio and TV advertisements would drive home that the consumption of sugary drinks was leading to higher rates of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.

Fitness Inspiration on facebook occasionally has such gems of wisdom along with their hotbod pics!

Whenever I have junk food (which is admittedly rare), I always get coke zero or some diet version of whatever drink they stock (cue outraged cries of cancer beverages, yes I know) which I don't doubt earns me scoffs from the people serving my meal. "Why bother with a diet drink if you're eating this shit?" Same way if I drop my phone I don't figure ah well, its slightly scuffed better keep dropping it til it smashes (no Iphone for me clearly if it didn't smash first time). Just because I'm eating a meal with excess calories doesn't mean I need to have ALL the excess calories.

Nothing wrong with junk food in moderation. I try and eat as little processed food as possible but who isnt partial to a bit of junk occasionally? Do some serious exercise (ie not walking!) at least 3 times a week and you'll probably stay pretty healthy and lean.

Used properly sports drinks are often incredibly beneficial

Yeh but regardless of what you eat, if your an inactive couch potato, your gonna get fat and IMHO thats the issue facing the majority of the world.

Our whole life is close to being behind a computer screen. Kids want to play Xbox not outdoors, people socialise online and make friends online, we work, shop online Soon enough 75% of the population are going to be human slugs

I have to put my hand up - I drink an unholy amount of sugary shit. I like it. If I quit the sugary stuff I'm sure I'd add 10 years to my life. But it'd be 10 torturous years without sugary delicious-ness. So meh. Fuck that.

And most things I eat need a sprinkling of white powder, whether it be salt on my chips or sugar on my weet-bix (in fairness only psychopaths don't add sugar to their weet-bix).

At work I've noticed lots of people love to climb up on that high horse whenever the topic of diet comes up.

The sugar transforms into toxic fat happy2.

The truth about sugary drinks

In the past several decades sugary drink consumption has increased around the globe and Australia ranks among the top 10 countries for per capita consumption of soft drinks in the world.

Why is this a problem?

The consumption of sugary drinks is associated with increased sugar and energy intake and in turn, weight gain, obesity and chronic diseases. This is because the energy in sugary drinks is extra energy your body doesn’t need so it gets turned into fat, including toxic fat. Toxic fat is known to release dangerous levels of chemicals (including hormones) into the body. Because of this, excess toxic fat can lead to heart disease, type 2 diabetes and several cancers.

What are sugary drinks?

Most people know sugar-sweetened soft drinks are full of sugar but energy drinks, sports drinks, and even fruit drink can have just as much sugar and can also lead to weight gain and obesity.

By highlighting the amount of sugar and energy in sugary drinks, LiveLighter is hoping to unveil the truth about sugary drinks!

I'm hardly worried magoc - I have enough worries of my own to deal with. I've put this up for discussion and information and the response has been varied.

Grrrrrrrrr.......I don't say I have given up but sometimes I really wonder what is actually left to be consumed and declared healthy? Let's put it this way.......my great grand parents didn't have coca cola and Fanta but they certainly had sweet coffee/tea with cream, potatoes with white sauce and a cunning sweet dessert to follow and they actually lived to their late 80ties/90ties.........plus my grand dad smoked cigars.....
OK that is not an add for smoking or bad food but even if you eat the healthiest food on earth it is not enough.
Alcohol, sugar, fat, cigarettes, etc ..........I think it comes down to the 'physical' life style. Modern life is a desktop life style.......move your body.......move your mind and use your body for what it was made for in the first instant........and that's not sitting around all day long.

I don't think there were too many parents who'd drink the equivalent of 10 teaspoons of sugar EVERY day though. I see kids go to places like Hungry Jacks and get those "drink as much as you want" soft drink deals and knock themselves out.

The local fish and chippie down the road offers a LARGE bottle of coke with every family size serve of f and c.

I had a diabetes scare earlier this year & as a knee jerk reaction I instantly cut out all of these sorts of drinks. It was hard to start with. I craved them for a little while but it passed quickly. I almost never drink this sort of thing anymore. On the very rare occassion I do indulge in a can of coke, I can never finish it. It ends up just being too sweet. And thats not limited to just Coke. Its all of them!
As a side effect, I dropped 5 kilos almost instantly.

How about the so called 'sugar-free' drinks, like coke zero, diet coke etc..........they obviously avoid the sugar and the weight to go with it but the sugar replacement chemical can't be good for you either..........ahhhhhh what to do..........water only?............but then again soda water is apparently not too good and who knows what is in the tap water (even with filter). A glass of red wine per day or does that make you an alcoholic?
Modern life is hard............so I decided to go with the flow.....a bit of everything for enjoyment........your body will tell you when you go over the limits ;)

Yeah I read somewhere that the sugar free thingy is not good for you. The chemical could cause development of cancer.
I don't drink soft drinks and add no sugar in my coffee and tea.

Like a lot of other things fizzy and/or sugary drinks should be regarded as an occasional treat rather than a regular indulgence. Same with foods like cake, pastries, sweets etc and even alcohol. Keep them under control and use them in moderation and they are fine.

Also, the artificial sugar/sweetener doesn't trick your brain into thinking you got real sugar. If you want a 'sugar fix', you need sugar. The Aspartame won't do the job. So don't be surprised if you find yourself stuffing your face with cake shortly after consuming your can of diet coke. This may explain why you see so many fatties drinking diet coke.

That's interesting. I thought diet drinks are a full replacement for sugar addicts.
Luckily I am a savoury girl through and through (no sugar in coffee, no chocolate, no cake etc.) but I do admit to Coke zero during my night shifts. Somehow keeps me awake when coffee doesn't work anymore.

I am with Svengali........everything in moderation and you will be fine.
