How old is too old??

Stuck at the doctors surgery today and I happened to pick up a copy of Womans Day.
(I really wished it had been a Penthouse magazine instead but beggars can`t be chooses)

Anyway it seems Elle is getting ready to have a kid at 51. I also read a story recently that a 60+ year old women is also planning on giving birth soon.

So how old is too old to have kids??

Sonia Kruger had her bub @ 49 but i think biologically once a woman hits very late 30's / early 40's it's starting to become rather difficult. That's not to say it's wrong but just the risks are a lot higher.

A good parent is a good parent at any age so age in most cases is irrelevant. I think it helps that most 40-55yo's in 2015 are far "younger" than 20 years ago but it'd be a hard slog for a woman in her early 40's i'd imagine.

I agree, it's the increased risk to the child that must be considered, e.g. 'Women who are 35 years or older when they become pregnant are more likely to have a pregnancy affected by Down syndrome than women who become pregnant at a younger age.' (Of course, this does not mean it is a certainty, just that the likelihood is greater than if she was younger than 35.)

I guess the other aspect to consider is that, if you have kids in your 50s (or 60s now) thanks to modern medical science, can you be as confident you will be around to raise them to adulthood (since mortality increases with age obviously)? People are living longer on average these days so perhaps that's a calculated risk.

Now I know I'm gonna get it with both barrels from the right-to-choose brigade, but as a fuddy-duddy, I would raise my judgmental eyebrow at a woman deliberately choosing to defer having children until she is over 40/45 -- especially for career reasons -- and then relying on artificial means to conceive, thereby increasing the risks to her child. (As opposed to a woman who, for example, didn't meet and marry her husband until that age and then they decided to try and have children.)
