The Science of the Perfect Nap
According to a growing body of research, napping is a smart thing to do. It can help refresh the mind, make you more creative, boost your energy.

Taking a nap, we've seen time and again, is like rebooting your brain. But napping may be as much of an art as it is a science. The Wall Street Journal offers recommendations for planning your perfect nap, including how long to nap and when.

The sleep experts in the article say a 10-to-20-minute power nap gives you the best "bang for your buck," but depending on what you want the nap to do for you, other durations might be ideal.

For a quick boost of alertness, experts say a 10-to-20-minute power nap is adequate for getting back to work in a pinch.

For cognitive memory processing, however, a 60-minute nap may do more good, Dr. Mednick said. Including slow-wave sleep helps with remembering facts, places and faces. The downside: some grogginess upon waking.

Finally, the 90-minute nap will likely involve a full cycle of sleep, which aids creativity and emotional and procedural memory, such as learning how to ride a bike. Waking up after REM sleep usually means a minimal amount of sleep inertia, Dr. Mednick said.

In addition to those recommendations, one surprising suggestion is to sit slightly upright during your nap, because it will help you avoid a deep sleep. And if you find yourself dreaming during your power naps, it may be a sign you're sleep deprived.

While you're planning your nap, don't forget to time it during the right time of day as well.

At the moment I am suffering from sleep deprivation,
so nap time is very close to my heart...
I am accompanying my Mom to SIngapore

to see her sick brother this coming week for a week;
we have our lovely Natacha leaving for Sydney (what the hell for?);
we are training staff here at Langtrees -
- so expect to hear from new receptionists soon!
So needless to say there will be NO EXTRA TIME OFF.....

so lets cramp all work / getting home in Christmas mode/
getting gardens ready for the hot summer/
getting packed for SIngers ---
I NEED POWER NAPS!!!

Any of you get that inclined when sleep deprived?!!

I'm a napper sometimes but only because I'm a lazy ba$tard and bored s##tless. If I have a crappy nights sleep I'm more inclined for a nap the next day. The naps can range from 30 minutes to 3 hours

Power naps are good for driving long distance trips

While driving or in the truck bays Col I prefer to nap in the truck bays personally

The Mother who can sleep through anything?

As you may know Vivien Many of us men have that ability Especially when a new born is in the house And we have the ability to wake up as soon as the baby is changed,
feed and all the other joys of having a infant in the house

With the Graveyard shifts occasionally I'll get home and need a nap if I haven't been consistent with getting up at a similar time during the week. I'll have to take note of the original post to get the best bang for my buck :p

I never used to be a particularly tired person. I'd have the odd nap here or there, but generally if there is day light about there is work to be done somewhere! Working night shift was a bit screwy with me and sleep became this strange mysterious thing that everybody spoke about but I didn't seem to really know what they were on about anymore :p Gosh I didn't realise how much I valued sleep until i wasn't having any ^.^

So happy to be working hours that are more compatible with my body clock. Naps are now reserved for after late nights out with the hubby/BFFs and for lazy Sundays ;)

Can't nap.....not during the day anyway and even after a long night shift and only with a few hours sleep after. I kind of have the feeling that I might miss out on something if I go for a nap. I know that sounds strange........to miss out on what??????? So I usually go through the day without a nap and have an early night (if possible).
I managed over the last years to train myself to sleep a bit longer after a night shift and keep myself busy during the day........being busy is a perfect way to stay awake. ;)

Don't matter how tired i am a 15 min powernap will give me another 4 functioning hrs. Can only do it twice tho! Any more than 15 mins powernap -like an hour- and my body switches off for the day.
I need 7 hrs a night. Can survive on 5 one night but any less than that and im ratshit.

Agreed! Especially when you consider the perfect example of exercise giving you MORE energy!
True....unless you over do it..........admittedly been there done that........and the result is rather frustrating. It is all about a good balance.

My naps happen when I need to be alert later/don't want to cancel my plans and think I will have to cut them short if I don't have one but I'm with you on the grumpiness! 90mins to nap, 60mins for people to avoid me until I'm back on track lol
