I must be the only person I know who has not jumped on the travel over seas holiday bandwagon. I'm hoping to break that this year. :D

So what advice would you give about travel? Places? Prices? Pros? Cons? Best time of year? Dont/Take the kids? Amazing holiday experiences?

I'm lucky enough to travel for pleasure a bit.. it means i have no money but and some weeks i'd be lucky to have $50 to my name :D

Tell me what your perfect holiday would be like and i'll see if anywhere i've been matches up?

I truely would love to become a travel agent but the dollars arent so good.

I'm checking in from OS now and its best trip i've had!

New Zealand is great. If you want snow, NZ or Japan are the pick of the bunch "locally".

Forget Indo and south east asia. Most places are a bit shit really.

Hawaii is an amazing holiday!!

Agreed about Kiwiland. I spectacular scenery is your thing you can't go past it and they even speak English there (well, sort of;) English)

Asian countries are great for a cultural change (and who wants same old same old anyway?) If you stay on the fairly well beaten tourist trails you will find plenty of people speak English well enough and if you can pick up a few words of the local lingo it makes things even easier. Just take sensible precautions about not eating raw fruit/veges and avoid the local water and soft drinks or ice made with it. Some nasty tummy bugs like giardia can ruin your holiday.

There is plenty of useful advice and tips on the Thorn Tree website - an offshoot of Lonely Planet.

Places like Hong Kong and Singapore are interesting enough and safe so far as drinking the local water and eating local food goes.

Wherever you go, try and just enjoy what is on offer, enjoy and respect the local culture and customs and leave prejudices and judgement behind. I have found on my travels that Australians generally (apart from the Bali Bogans) are well thought of overseas and it is our responsibility to foster that friendship for our own benefit and that of future Australian travellers.

I am in Taiwan as I write this It is a place I would recommend to anyone You might see a dozen westerners in a day So totally unlike most Asian countries. The food is wonderful though at times bizarre ,the people are friendly
Though with limited English And it is safe

Mountains and lakes modern cities and traditional enclaves

Only bad day was when the smog was blown across from mainland China Otherwise top country and a little bit diffetent

And svengali While I agree the bogans in Bali give us all a bad name it is not only Bali
We were in Austria last October fest and there was a tent near the cops tent with sawdust all over the floor It was a special tent for Aussie kiwi & pommie drinkers
Oh it made us Oh Soooo proud

I would highly recommend Vancouver, was there a long while ago. You can hire a car drive south across the border to Seattle, etc...airfare can be a bit dear.

I've always wanted to visit the big apple, Europe, and NZ (not for the sheeps), they are on my wishlist.

Sorry, got a bit side-tracked there! As for travel destinations, my favourite is Eastern Europe. Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro in particular...NZ is high on my wishlist - I think that will be next for me... And for peaceful, languid, lazing by the beach I'm thinking Maldives & Palau...

well, I don't have a budget in mind... And since I'd be travelling with my Hubby it means twice the price really... we'd love to go to a lot of places. So regardless it means saving up... but Canada has always been high on the list. I don't want to settle for the holiday I can afford...I'd rather keep saving until I had what it would require to make the most out of going.

Good! You could spend $2000 going to Bali or another asian country full of greedy people trying to rip you off (i dont blame them lol) and it'd be OK but i'd save your pennies.

China Southern do flights to Vancouver for around $1300 from Perth. Stopping in China.

Cathy Pacific also go to LA from Perth through Hong Kong. If you pick up a cheap flight its a cheap flight between LA and vancouver.

Book around 10/11 months out and you'll get the best prices. Also i always book exit aisle seats. It usually costs about an extra $100 each way on an international flight but its worth it.

Canada is unreal. Best time for good weather is July through to about September.

I'd then go to Calgarry (bit plain) but Banff and lake louise are amazing!!

Accomodation is pretty reasonable in canada and most of the US. Heaps of nice places between $150-200

Flights in canada are $$ though so its a bit hard. Careful about wanting to visit niagra falls, its very dangerous...... NYC is close by and that makes for an expensive (but awesome) trip:D

The number 1 out of the places I haven't been to is NYC. Are there any reasonably priced hotels there?
