Herbal Medicines: The Need

T

Townle

Jason Roberts had been a victim of chronic stomach ache for years. The pathological medicine he took gave him relief, but it was not long lasting. He almost lost confidence in a complete cure of the disease till a traditional alternative health practitioner advised him to take some herbal medicine. With a strict control on his diet and with the intake of a particular herbal concoction for two weeks, the stomach ache became a thing of past.

Though not very popular among the present generation, the herbal medicines have a curing capability which was identified by ancient medical practitioners thousands of years back. They were used as the remedy for many major diseases in the ancient days. One of the main qualities of these medicines is that they are devoid of any side effects. Herbal medicines are largely used in spas and by the traditional alternative medicine practitioners. Even the World Health Organisation has identified the relevance of herbal medicines in the health care sector.

Preparation of the herbal medicines remained a secret and it was known to only some traditional practitioners till recently. But now there are many institutes which teach/train people on the preparation of herbal concoctions. They seem to be very effective for curing some diseases, and surely the above mentioned experience is not an isolated one.

The Chinese people have a book on herb healing, and natural therapies. This book happens to be over 5,000 years old. Until recently from pressure from the World Martial arts Assoc the book was kept under lock and key since 1949. And who was it who kept this important healing system of natural herbs,, The top 7 drug producing compaies. Why because we could all grow our own medines. A Chinese herboligist in Sydney would be the Aust leading practicioner in Natural therapy and Herbs.

Was with a friends mum in Singapore once when she dragged me into a chinese medicine shop and after watching him collect some bits and peices I commented to him about the look and smell and told him that I can`t understand how she could bring herself to either eat or drink that stuff.
He replied, she`s not buying it for herself, she`s buying it for you...

reason why majority of herbal remedies are crock, as the ones that work, get investigated and synthesised. Like happy2 mentioned aspirin. Taxanes (chemotherapy). By and large the ones remaining, are the ones that don't have much medicinal value.

This is what the pharmaceutical companies would have us all believe.
Yes, pharmaceutical companies do synthesize the active constituents from herbal medicines. The beauty of mother nature is each whole herb with its multitude of actions has protective factors as well. Therefore they are void of the "side effects" pharmaceutical drugs have.

My background is in herbal medicine and the results I have/had would astound you. A perfect example is a gentleman I am treating at the moment with advanced prostate cancer. The cancer has spread beyond surgery. The doctors informed the gentleman on a scale of 10 this gentleman's cancer was a 9. His PSA readings 2 months ago were 39. After two months of herbal treatment and dietary changes his recent readings were 1. The doctors are amazed.

Well said Alexandra, i have a friend who has done propper Redimal Theropy and knows so much about herbal medications, everytime she has told me to use this or that and it has worked everytime instead of popping some pills which a doctor would have given me. Each to there own though, but give me mother nature anyday..

One more point to make on herbal medicines is they have the essence of life, man made medicines are deliberately made to be addictive(economics)

Some stuff works. we know it works becuase it goes through scientific testing to prove its efficacy. An example given already is Asprin, we could also look at St Johns Wort. Im happy to believe any treatment if it is up to scientific analysis and peer review.

I agree with you Cecil If treatments were a mix of Ancient and Western we would be far better off I mean western medicine has given us the simple flu jab even cervical cancer vaccination And some oncologists mix herbal with chemo now as a adjunct
And you cant just rely on Eastern medicine I mean in China the great home of herbal medicine Up until the end of WWII people regularly died of broken bones as they had no treatment ie casts etc for what is now a everyday worldwide treatment
But also dont forget their great herbal lore is also the core reason for the killing of Rhinos Tigers etc And dont forget those obscene bile factories

Actually, the biggest risk with herbal medicines is not in what they do (or don't do) but the fact that some people get carried away and rely on them too much.

O.K., if you have an upset tum and take a herbal preparation instead of an antacid tablet, fine, the bellyache will clear up, as it would in time anyway but, as all over the counter meds say;

"If symptoms persist, see your Doctor"

There is a real risk that while you are fiddling around with "The Colonel's 11 different herbs and spices" a dangerous but treatable condition could be getting right out of hand.

The most important ability a Doctor has, and the one which a herbalist or health store clerk lacks is that of diagnosis. Identifying the problem is the key to successful treatment which is why Doctors spend so long at University and working under supervision before they are turned lose on patients. Sure, they sometimes get it wrong, they are human after all, but they have got to have more clues than someone who has done a Mickey Mouse 4 - 6 week crash course in herbal treatment.
