My my, took a walk down there today (the pedestrian stretch between Barrack & Williams Street) OMG so many closed or empty stores. I must admit its been a while for me as I don’t shop, I buy. Having said that the empty stores and general lack of enthusiasm was kind of a downer.

Worse to come?

You should have seen it a couple months ago.

Maybe a dozen people weekdays.

London Court empty, at 2pm on weekday I was the only one there.

weather today probably didn’t help.

a lot of shops close earlier, AFL store still closed.

I live in the CBD and the cafes that used to be open 7 days are only open for a few hours (11am - 2pm) Mon to Fri for workers who have returned to the city. Most of the empty shops in Carillion/City Arcade are due to the planned refurbishment of the arcade, however many of the empty shops are in part to COVID and some were vacant way before the outbreak.

I spent a couple of nights/days in the CBD at a nice little boutique hotel for a mid week staycation a week or so back and it seemed to be a little busier in the CBD based on a previous work related visit a week or so before. Definitely due to the restrictions being lifted. Heading into the CBD today to pick something up so will see if there are more people shopping and socialising.

It is slowly picking up - School holidays start today and the Palace Cinema in Raine Square opened up again yesterday, so there should be increased foot traffic over the next two weeks.

All that said, I’ve had an interest in a boat rental down Mandurah for some time (retirement nest egg).

With the closed borders and restricted tourist destinations, hires since May have been nearly double same period last year, even without the Chinese tourists that were there last year - some silver linings I guess. not sure how long it will last. I’m hoping people will develop a taste as there will be some repeat business if they get hooked.
