Man dies in Origin pie eating competition
A rugby league fan has died during a State of Origin pie eating competition at a Townsville pub.
Friends of Bruce Holland believe if he didn't eat the chilli pie, he would've seen his beloved Maroons win their eighth straight series.
Mr Holland spent his last moments soaking up the origin spirit at the Bushland Beach Tavern.
"When volunteers were called up for the pie eating competition, of course, he was virtually first up there," Arthur McMahon from the Lillywhite Hotel Group said.
"Bruce had a couple of mouthfuls and then went into a choking spasm."
Staff and off-duty nurses performed CPR on Mr Holland but it wasn’t enough to save him.
A doctor pronounced the 64-year-old dead at hospital.
Bruce's friends said he had pre-existing medical conditions, and they want to know if it was those or the pie that brought on his death.
"He was very blue, then a little bit of pie came out. No, no. That's not good," Friend Michelle Bradley said of the incident.
"We'll never know. Was he choking on the pie? Did he lose breath and have a heart attack?"
The exact cause of Mr Holland's death is yet to be dtermined.
"The cause of death is forthcoming from his treating doctor," police said.
The hotel will review future pie eating competitions.
"Until we know the full scale of actually the aftermath, we're not to know," Mr McMahon said.
