It took them that long??? The international court of justice, must be operated by bunch of imbeciles. Whaling for scientific research and the research ended up as some whale burger in Japan? Hello?! Whale sashimi? Hello?! Whale meat for sale in supermarkets? Hello?! anyone home? 
A research vessel equipped with the killing tools and refrigerator big enough to keep them whale meat fresh? That's lots of whale meat for research *slurp slurp*.
I thought with the advance in tech, we no longer require to slice open animals to see what's inside?

When reading the title of this thread, I thought someone was going to flash !
Then it turned out to be all serious.
I'm not big on killing whales, but I eat meat, wear leather shoes and a leather jacket if I can finally afford one.
To me, the big problem is they are so inefficient at killing them, they must suffer for ages.
They say that whales have big brains and are almost human, but when I was young, lots of people had pet lambs, and they were like dogs - follow you around, play chasey, sleep on your bed (if your mum wasn't around), etc - then when they older, they went to market - lamb chops.
So I am in no position to take the high ground.

Inhumane slaughter of any animal is offensive. You just have to look at the butchering of the cows in Indonesia...
there was a massive public outcry from the Australian people and the government stopped live export ............ .for a few weeks. Then the cattle farmers were screwed as they could not feed the cattle that should have been sold and then they were up in arms ,so exportation resumes. The same thing happens to our sheep that are exported to the Middle East. It seems to be all about money....like everything else.
I am sure the Japanese will find away around this like everything else. Who is going to police the killing of Whales and what will the penalties be if caught.
I hope this is not a hollow victory!

Humpback whale numbers are steadily rising though. At the hight of commercial whaling (1940's) there was thought to be less than 3000 left worldwide. Now theres probably 100,000+ with truckloads in australia in season. Anyone who'se spent time on a boat in season has probably seen lots. In one day off rotto in 2012 we counted 27 and we werent even looking for them.
Whale meat is now worth SFA in Japan so they certainly wont be aiming to catch 600/700 of them this year. The reality is that if they were to catch a few whales it would be a sustainable fishery. No different to our western rock lobster fishery in perth. Its world class.
Far more alarming is the japanese slaughter of bottlenose dolphins at Taiji Cove.
