Weather app, google search, google maps and facebook would be the four I use most often.

Other apps I have downloaded would be things like E-Bay, Youtube, etc...

They're handy, but not essential. As long as my phone has a diary and an alarm on it, I'm good.

In addition to some of the above (Google Maps, Weather Live, news, etc.), I find my bank and credit card company apps a real boon for managing my millions... of cents. Travel apps (TripAdvisor, Expedia, Trivago, XE currency converter, World Clock, airline apps, etc.) can make planning and going on a trip so much more convenient and smoother. Also find myself making increasing use of Yelp and Skype these days. And who can keep up with TV without catch-up apps like ABC iview, Plus7, 9jumpin, TENplay and SBS on Demand?

Yes! my favourite App of all time is Shazam. I would buy a smart phone just for this app.
If anyone hasn't heard of it, it works like this. Ever walked into a restaurant, or coffee shop, and heard a song playing and wondered what it was called or who the band was? or you hear a song come on the car radio and it's great but you know they won't tell you who it is? Well you switch on the Shazam app and it scans a few seconds of the song and brings up all the details of the song and artist and allows you to purchase it from iTunes. My music collection just gets bigger daily from this app.

I also use an app called Runkeeper to map all my running activities. I trialed a lot of the major running apps and found that Runkeeper was the best.

There's one other app that I really like and use daily. It's called Sleep Cycle.

When I put my phone on charge at night, I leave it on the edge of my bed with Sleep Cycle running, and it records my sleep cycles based on movement on the bed. Ok so if you have a W/L over it won't work. But normally it graphs your sleep and gives you a report the next day on the quality of your sleep. It shows you if you've been disturbed during the night and how long you've been asleep for etc.

One other thing it does is, if you set the alarm on it to wake you up, it doesn't just wake you at the specified time, it waits to find your best sleep cycle to wake you. Apparently you go from deep to light sleep every half hour or so, and if your regular alarm wakes you during a deep cycle you feel tired and drowsy, but Sleep Cycle waits for you to be in the light cycle before triggering the alarm. You just specifiy a time range.

Another app I like to have on my new-fangled mobile device is a compass, like Commander Compass. No idea how it works but I only whip it out to impress the ladies.

With a smart phone Rochelle, you'll never need to work again. You'll be so busy with the "apps" that you won't have time :p.... actually they are great in their place.

I do want an app that gives people who walk into your path looking down at their smartphones a swift kick up the backside.

If the phone is so smart surely it should have a built-in anti collision app

You're right about that, I don't shazam or text or even talk on the phone when I'm driving, I find it too distracting. Although I do use the GPS function for directions and the last time I was in Perth, I got pulled over for using it but the cop was good and told me off for being from the East LOL! so I got out of a fine by promising I'd move to Perth.. so I'm still trying to keep my promise :D

You will all stare at your phone's and waste away like Dorian Gray

Huh?
Dorian Grey stayed forever youthful. It was his portrait that aged.

Develop a phone app that can take your picture and that picture ages for you whilst you stay the same age and you'll be a very rich man;)

Wrong Happy2.....I will employ somebody to paint a portrait and let it waste away for me.........far more economical (oh do I need an app for that??????? and ohhhhhh hang on instead of a portrait........a selfie will do?????????)
