They might sound a little overwhelming all written out like that.

But I'm going to play devil's advocate here. If you look at a lot of jobs that you've done and look at what you've done each day/week/month and broken it down into big picture categories, it probably looks a bit like that and probably with even more in it.

I used to work in senior admin in corporate for 8 years before I started stripping (this was before my current awesome job as a WL!) and my jobs always entailed these things and usually a lot more if you sat down and averaged it out.

Don't let it discourage you though. Those things you may not do all day/every day, and it won't always be intense. For example you may get busy during certain periods or only have to do certain tasks once a month or so.

Don't stress, chin up and go out there and rock it! Believe in yourself and go for it!

But Pixie, you've also said in another post that "If you can't do your job without it causing you a lot of emotional turmoil you have to question whether you should do the job? This goes with every job. Before stripping and then moving into the sex industry I worked in corporate for 8 years and was completely miserable and stressed and emotionally effed up by it... I used to **need** red wine at the end of my day to cope with the crap in the office. I don't know why I didn't start as a call girl earlier..?!?!!!"

A lot of these jobs are intense - this evening on ABC Radio, it was revealed that four countries have the world's longest working hours - Australia is one of them. In Australia, between 1974 and 1997 no marked change took place in the average amount of time spent at work by Australians of "prime working age" (that is, between 25 and 54 years of age). Throughout this period, the average time spent at work by prime working-age Australians (including those who did not spend any time at work) remained stable at between 27 and 28 hours per week. This unchanging average, however, masks a significant redistribution of work from men to women. Between 1974 and 1997, the average time spent at work by prime working-age Australian men fell from 45 to 36 hours per week, while the average time spent at work by prime working-age Australian women rose from 12 to 19 hours per week. In the period leading up to 1997, the amount of time Australian workers spent at work outside the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays also increased.[31]

In 2009, a rapid increase in the number of working hours was reported in a study by The Australia Institute. The study found the average Australian worked 1855 hours per year at work. According to Clive Hamilton of The Australia Institute, this surpasses even Japan. The Australia Institute believes that Australians work the highest number of hours in the developed world.[32]

From January 1, 2010, Australia enacted the new maximum weekly hour regulation under a new system created by the Fair Work Act 2009. Unless the additional hours are reasonable, the maximum weekly hours of work of a full-time employee is 38 hours

And in most of these workplaces, while they claim to train you - quite often they expect you to hit the ground running or to pick things up very fast.

Contrarian, you are correct. Which is why I moved out of it because it wasn't something that worked for my personality and I needed to leave.

But everyone needs to make a decision that is personal for them. Some people thrive in those kind of environments. Everyone has to choose what is right for them.

If it isn't an environment you thrive in, try something that could work for you.

But just because a particular job/environment doesn't work for you, doesn't make it 'bad', and doesn't necessarily mean that employers have unreasonable expectations, it just means that maybe it isn't meant to be for you if that's not your thing. But it could be someone else's thing.

So, find what works for you. Ok, if it's not what makes you happy, don't pursue that option anymore, try something else. And leave that work to someone who does actually enjoy it and cope with it.

Leave behind the things that make you miserable, and chase the things which will make you happy.

Look at what you like doing in your life, and then try to find a way of making it commercial.

I don't have all the answers, and this probably sounds like I'm being a little arrogant. I don't mean it that way.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is: Stay positive, choose what works for you instead of bashing your head against the brick wall of miserable, and be the master of your own happiness.

Just saw the addition re hours worked.

You are correct Australians do work long hours. I used to regularly work between 60-70hrs/wk as an Exec Assist/Event Manager. More if I had events on.

Now I work about 50 hours per week.

But still, ok, that is the average. But you can still choose. Become the master of your own destiny, if you don't like something, change it.

Regarding training. I've always been lucky that I pick things up quickly. But you are right, it is hard to find a company that really takes the time to train people properly, that's why there is such crap service in Aust usually because people don't know how to do their jobs properly often (drives me nuts!). I don't have all the answers for these things.

It isn't perfect, nothing ever is.

All I have to say is, if you don't like it, choose something different. Change it. Start a business, choose a different career path, work part time, go back and study. Do something positive. Don't keep thinking misery is the only option (as I did for years), believe in yourself enough to choose happiness, it is out there.

You often see on those job related sites Jobs and descriptions from the other end of the scale

They list a huge number of great attributes that the Job has and how great the team is and use all the hyperbole in the world
Because it is the most boring brain numbing position and they will say anything just to get applicants through the door

I can relate to job adds like the ones posted. I work in IT at a technical / project management level and the ones I have to apply for are sometimes astounding in what they ask for.

They'll basically want you to have every IT skill imaginable, insist in a degree or a heap of industry qualifications and a minimum of 5 years experience and then say it's a trainee position and would ideally suit someone straight out of Uni so that they can pay you bugger all.

Often they just want someone to do basic tech / helpdesk work but get carried away when they're writing the job description like it's a wish list of everything they could want. The skill is trying to read between the lines and find out what they really want.

I reckon all that skill requirements are BS, in the end of the day is who you know gets you the job. Or you left such a freaking impression in the interview that they want you...or they might just be desperate...lol

I agree MrH, it's mostly about demonstrating to the prospective employer that you'll fit in as part of the team and not be the office psycho :)

yep MrD, skills can be acquired, but the ability to BS is priceless, it's either you got it or you don't.

My problem is these jobs expect the earth due the unspoken element of what you will be required to do and only want to pay the min.

I actually think part of the problem is that many organisations have or are going through restructures which means reducing customer service staff and adding another level of management to make the few that are left work harder with no tangible cost savings to the company or benefits to customer service. But on a resume, any change is good change.

Well, in a related thread some months ago, Fudd said the following:

...and just on this, thinking outside the box and getting the right resources balance in place would also be of assistance.

I'm a compliance adviser in the AFSL/ACL area and I still see some small to medium sized firms employing a person on a full time basis but having to piggy back that engagement with non compliance work in order to fill in the time. For example, employing a person to also do Office Mgt, IT & Admin duties in addition to the key tasks for employing them. How are you going to find someone who is proficient across all of these disciplines?

What they should be doing is to look at their resource requirements and, if possible, out source those tasks that do not require a full time to be engaged.

Fudd

It sure rings true.

Fudd is right, but to answer how you find someone who's proficient in all those disciplines? You hire a manager with a lack of knowledge and who's over paid and knows they can't get the same money anywhere else who'll then tell senior management that everything is possible as they are a "can do" person with many skills in the use of cliché's and let them do the hiring who'll hire a friend once they crap themselves and realise that one person can't actually do all those things, then pay their friend big $$$ to tell the senior management that it's all possible while Outsourcing the components that they find they can't do. It's easy, Australian Government departments have relied on the principle for years :)
