Dune versus LOTR

Ok. So I'm reading the news equivalent of junk food at the moment.

Link is broken so has been taken down

This article draws close to an interesting point: Dune versus LOTR. Which is the better book?
I'm a deadset Dune man. The concepts of Dune simply wipe the floor with LOTR.

Awwww c'mon Col! check out the book. Its got mindblowing stuff in it. Evolution, genetics, climate control, manifest destiny the list goes on. The revenge story is like a sideline compared to all that stuff. I try to read it once every couple of years.

Wont Dune the movie suffice?

The new Hobbit movie is coming out soon. The first was a real borefest.

Sorry dude. The movies dont even scratch the surface of Dune. The books of LOTR really are the dullest books I've ever read.

I read the first LOTR book and I was bored s##tless.
I was bored s##tless with the movies also.

Saw the first Harry Pothead movie and that was one to many.

Would LOTR be an easier read if it was rewritten in the modern style of writing that you are used to rather than from the 1930's 40's

No I prefer 30's and 40's prose to our lazy modern everyone can do it style.

LOTR is just a steaming pile of doo, doo.

Definitly not! Its the pacing I find hard. It moves dead slow & it feels the need to describe every single object they encounter. Not to mention every single pointless character they encounter. Characters that you dont get a description for. And yet you get a 10 page description on a tree. Compare it to Conan the Barbarian which was written BEFORE LOTR. Hell, compare it to the 3 Musketeers. I found the 3 Musketeers a bit heavy because of the style of the langaue but still much more readable then LOTR.

Hail! Robert E Howard. Never read a Conan but I've read Pigeons From Hell it's a great little short story.

I remember The Willows by Algernon Blackwood fondly another rippa short story.

Shorter the better I've always found in the literary world... like my punt$

Conan was awesome. Solomon Kane was another one of Robert E Howards characters. He was pretty incredible too.
I like fast paced action. A bit like my punts too, now I think of it. You reckon theres a connection??

Bobbie was pals with H.P Lovecraft so he's got to be good. It's a shame Bobbie blew his brains out at 30 when his mummy died.

Connection? Dunno. Short and quick was my punting style. Now I rock up and they keep prodding me to keep me awake.
